The articles didn't go into any detail about the standard hubs, just dismissed them as being "more of the same". One report stated they were "substantially unchanged" in design. Another termed the new design a "facelift" of the old model. Doesn't sound like a major technological breakthrough. Kinda disappointing since they have left the current hubs totally untouched since 1996. You wait 7 years for a new hub, and you get a "substantially unchanged facelift".

give it a shiny finish and make all the pros ride them so everyone will be brainwashed, sell their old ones and give shimano all their money...grrrrrrrrrrrrr!

disk model:

total groupo weight:
XTR 950 (V brake) 2796 gr
XTR 960 (V BRAKE) 2721 GR
XTR 965 (disk brake) 2834 gr

That's hysterical. The current ones weigh 133/311g. All the folks who have been buying the "closeout" 2002 model hubs are smarter than they know. Not only is 2002 a lot cheaper, it's gonna be lighter too?

Curious as to where you got your weight figures from, is it a magazine article, etc.?
If they ARE heavier,it would be nice if they had a larger flangeAZ-X

and a bigger axle to make stiffer wheels. Those things have always been issues and you'd think that the big S would address those better by now--especially now that they are making disc hubs as well...
