Did a race in New England as a tune up for next weeks Mt. Snow Norba Nat. The system worked perfect @ about 40 lbs, lots of rocks, lots of roots, Tire used Skinny Jimmy mounted on Mavic 317 disc."cool"

Winstead Woods in Ct. Tough course just keeps coming at you no chance for rest plus 90 + degrees, I think a loop is about 4.4 miles +/- good fun was had by all.
how does the Skinny Jimmy perform in deep mud?Max

especially in wet, muddy conditions? did a race yesterday, and it was raining for days. i crashed 5 times cuz my fat comp s light didnt grip enough on the slippy (really) muddy grass passages.....

also important because of world championships this year, it will surely rain like hell and then the grass-traverses wont be rideable cuz the comp s light will slip off sideways. is the SJ better? or are the knobs way too small for mud? shall i buy the hutchinson mosquito 1.85 instead? (i´d get this one very cheap...)

BTW: congrats!!!!

having tryed all these i will say the SJ was the best, but i never did try it in deep mud as it'd very dry this year. New England

For my local XC racing (western Holland - clay, sand and lots of grass) I ride Skinny Jimmies whenever it's wet. I have had no traction problems whatever with the SJ's. They have enough grip to corner quite quickly, and slice through all but the thickest mud. I did flat my rear on a HT once (run them at 4 bar if you can, no less), but other than that they're fine.

Only in the very stickiest of clay will the SJ's be too much - then Black Shark Mud 1.5"'s are the only option.

i got the black shark mud 1.5, i use them for cyclo cross. but they have a very high rolling resistance, what doesnt make them an option for anything beside 15 cm deep mud. i´ll try my SJ in the rear, the comp s light in the front

BTW: cool nickname!

Let me know how the Comp S performs up front. I've always been told it was kind of scary as a front tire, but I'm still pondering getting a set. Gotta love any tire with a Michelin man on the side :0)

i love it! back in my UST days i rode the comp s UST 1.95, which was great everywhere. now i got the comp s light since my jimmies have been worn down.

comp s light: 450 g, useable as UST tire (!), 52,5 mm carcasse and thread width, more volume than python airlites

the comp s light is great everywhere, especially under dry to wet conditions. only in deep mud i t washed out in a race in a steep switchback on wet grass+deep mud (it rained for days), but still very predictable.

i´d buy it again, also as a rear tire!
Danke schön. Still debating Comp S or Scorpion 2.0" (NM)€®i© Wi©to®

This year's Nationals were on a super-wet surface, mostly forest, little roots. I explored the lap on my spare bike that had Jimmy's on it, and I feared the worst, as my racebike was on Minotaurs, and time was too short too swap, just before a championship. So I headed to the startingline with my all(oy)-rigid bike on Minotaurs, figuring at least the drivetrain would out-perform the sparebike by a big margin. Well, the Minotaurs turned out to be great in the mud! There were pools covering all of the singletrack, no escape, prety bad really. The Minotaurs are super-precise steering in the loose wet stuff, and traction is decent, but not for steep mudclimbs. The Minotaur is known to shine on grass as well. The sharp, almost non-wearing knobs hook up really well. For rear traction you might want a SJ, and I personally didn't like the M's on the messy rooty downhill in the course, but I never did like that one anyways, and I was one of the very few on a rigid. Rolling-resistance is very low.
I did one race last winter, with the Minotaur up front for speed, trust and weight, and a Black Sharp Mud 1.5" in the rear for brutal traction. It worked for me, hey, I won the race that way! My only 2 other wins were both on Minotaurs front and rears, borh grassrootsraces. You don't want them on anything wetter than bone-dry pavement or tarmac, but the same goes for the Black Shark Mud of course. I have yet to try the SJ out, maybe it's it's name that doesn't appeal to me.

Tires were great, had some engine problems. It didn't seem to push the bike up the hills as fast as I thought it should have.
