Need smaller chain ring for 2x9 HelpSteveA

I am using a 29 x 42 now and want to go a little smaller on the smaller of the two chainrings. It's a 5 bolt patern, I'm thinking 28 or 26, I'm thinking with all the climbs at Mt Snow and the long race it might be a bit much toward the end of the race with the current 29 ? Any ideas Thanks Steve A

...you will need to use a "granny gear" ring and move the 42 to the middle position. May need a longer BB spindle, too.

I ran a 44/28, 2x7 combo for years by doing it that way.

This is good info. I am running a 29/44T but was curious about your setup. The 16 tooth spread was ok for the derailler? I had heard that a 15 tooth spread b/w rings was the max. Maybe depends on the type of swing. . .dunno really.

On a triple, if you have a big size jump between the outer and middle ring it is nearly impossible to make the upshift from the granny to the middle ring. It tends to go straight to the big ring.

I even ran a 45/28. Shifting was like using a toggle switch. Just shove the lever all the way one way or the other and the shift was made (barend shifter on dropbars.)
