I want to lighten my Mt. Tam 29Dirtrashking

I have a new Mt. Tam 29 thats stock except for egg beater pedals. I realize that i can't make it superlight, but I'd really like to shave some weight. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. BTW, does anyone know how much the wheelsets weigh, and what other choices I have?

First, Except for the hubs, the wheels are about as light as you would want to go without giving up strength.

The other places to look at to lose weight are:

* saddle
* seatpost
* bottom bracket
* crankset
* handlebar
* stem

But choose well. Some high-end parts are not much, if any, lighter than what you have.

The WTB 29" tires might be lighter.

You could also go to a rigid fork.

WTB tires are maybe 20g lighter each, but are also a little bit narrower. WTB is planning 2003 models with a kevlar bead, with may enable them to reach the already claimed 640g for the present stell beaded models.
If you replace ALL parts, the Tam can be brought down to sub- 10kg, as I've calculated my new-to-be-built 29" custom project.

On tires : try light 26" tubes that are still 2"+ wide, and force them on the 700c rim. Takes a little extra effort, but saves mayor weight. As a spare tube, always carry the WTB tube, not some 26" one.

Cheap weight can always be won in the grips, although not much gram-wise.

See ONE light green Kelly custom bike, at www.communityzero.com/29er , the first and only 29" webcommunity. Lots of 29" riders to share your knowlegde with.

Happy trails!

I was in Crested Butte a couple weeks ago and met a guy that just carried a ultra light cyclocross tube that was a large diameter. It was way lighter that the WTB
Kenda will be making a 130g tube for their 640g 52mm tire nmCloxxki
