Frogs vs' egg beaters vs' 959's(8 posts)

Frogs vs' egg beaters vs' 959'sSpanner

ive had some spd dx (the grey ones) for a while now and im shaving weight off my bike...

Frogs vs' egg beaters vs' 959's?????
The first two involves a new system / more cost (two bikes to change) for one pair of shoes but are they any good????
My biggest concern is mud clearance, method/speed of unclipping or should i just be more sensable and stick to 'she'mano????
do frogs last a few falls... (do stones get stuck in the clip on the sole) do you roll off eggbeaters????

Im not too keen on Atac's...

Thanks for the advice
well...Aesop Rock

if mud clearance is your number one concern then eggbeaters are the ticket. but you say you're not keen on the ATAC system then I would say go with the 959's. I hate the spd system. I feel trapped in them pointing one direction, and I don't like the feel of the click in and out. But hey to each his own. Don't go with the frogs, on the road bike yes, on the mountain bike no.
i love my frogs!Max

had times, spd´s (several) and now the speedplays. great in mud, supereasy entry (u really "slip" into the pedal, not like other systems where u have to search for the right shoe position to click into the pedals), supereasy release, lots of float, lightweight and the easiest maintenance on the whole world.
Frogs OK, super lightpedalAZ

They are the only clipless pedals I have ever used, so I cannot speak with knowledge about the retention action on Shimano, Time and Crank Bros. I struggle getting into them when in a technical section, not getting out. The float is really nice to have, especially given my one weak knee (no ACL). The entry is cake in flats, or smooth terrain; in a tech section, however, where you need to step in really quickly and precisely, it is possible to think you are in but not be, leading to a slip and a second attempt, because there is not clear confirmation on entry. I chalk part of this trouble up to me not being that proficient in the tech stuff, rather than to the pedals themselves.

They are SUPER LIGHT (ti version 209 grams). Given that they are rotating weight, even if a set of Shimanos might be a little easier to get into, why put up with two or three times the weight?

As an alternative, I picked up a set of Corratec Ti's on sale. They are only 243 grams and have a more conventional entry and release system, but are very hard to find.

I've used only the Times and the Beaters. I enjoyed my time with the Times. Very nice click-in feel, lots of float (maybe too much), very tough, and they are excellent in the mud. My only complaint is they're pretty friggin heavy.

I'm using the Beaters now. They have a similar click-in feel to the Times. I found them to be just as tough as the Times and the work just as well in the mud. They're easier to get in and out of than the Times, I've mastered getting in forwards and backwards. I've only rolled it a couple of times and that's because I was being lazy and my shins paid the price.

I like both. Times are bit heavy but have a nicer platform. The beaters let you clip in a couple of different ways and are way lighter. Buy a set used and choose for yourself.

Frogs are excellent pedals: very light, durable (in spite of the plastic housing), and free float. However, they are NOT the best mud pedal and you should look for something else if your ride in a lot of mud. I've used them for 6 years and love them (as my name suggests) but rarely ride in mud. When I do they are a pain to click in (but still easy out).
LOVE my eggbeaters.FWF

Swithced from Bontrager RE2 (which I liked, but they are wearing out and I wanted something lighter.) and I immediately felt more connected to my bike. I had to trim a little rubber from my shoes to clip out quickly, but now they are sweet. S

I switched from Wellgo to Shimano to Time and finally to Eggbeaters, the Eggbeaters are the best pedal I have tried (very similar to the Times). Rolling off the pedal would be a problem if you rode uncliped but its so easy to clip in you won't.
