| Maxxis Flyweight 330g 1.9 | FSR Aug 12, 2002 11:43 AM | | Anyone has tried this brand new tire ? "The lightest MTB tire in the world" according to Maxxis "
Is 330g the real weight ? Puncture resistance ? Durability ? Traction ?
I'm considering it to replace my Spec Rockster Pro 1.9 (500g).
Thank you for your comments. |

i started doubting when i saw how gunn-rita-dahle won the european championships this year on the 330 front and rear (note: there is also a 490g version with slightly higher knobs). it was raining for days, most of the course was on grass (short steep climbs, fast turns, traverses) and a little bit of forest (was in a park) with a muddy DH + wet stones. gunn rita won although it was heavily raining, and climbed those steep uphills where marga fullana (normal knobbies) could follow and had to get off the bike!!!
the 330 has very low knobs, but i suppose it´s the rubber compound that makes the tire extremely grippy on every surface. when i first tried it, it rained the last 24 hours, so the trails were really muddy. of course the flyweight didnt grip like a panaracer fire xc mud 1.8 in deep mud, BUT:
1. shed mud perfectly
2. was very predictable in deep mud - i could do real drifts without using the brake. i just quickly pushed the rear wheel to a side and could do cool controlled dirfts. however, it was only possible in deep mud, on normally wet ground it gripped that well that i couldnt make any drifts.
3. doesnt slip easier than a normal tire would do on wet roots, and IMO it gripped more than other tires on wet stones and rocks.
the claimed weight of 330g is true! (like every maxxis tire) it accelerates so supereasy, and rolls very fast too!
however, i only used it as a rear tire, i would never use a semislick in the front, unless it´s a hillclimb race.
i havent had any problems yet with punctures. BTW: at 330g, the tire is still airtight, not like the twister SS that has many leaks. inflation with stan´s old strips was very easy due to tight fit.
but mind that this tire will wear faster than heavy ones cuz of the soft rubber. otherwise it wont grip well....
TSU: great tire, lots of grip, predictable, good mud shedding, and light!! width 48 mm
i´d buy it |
| re: Maxxis Flyweight 330g 1.9 | Malcolm Aug 13, 2002 2:43 AM | | I have weighed one and yes weight is close to specs, which is unusual for Maxxis as they are normally 30-40 gms heavier than specced.- my experience anyway.
I have a friend who runs one on a 2002 Specialized enduro and he said it washed out a couple of times on sandy/clay type hard pack course, but the last couple of times he rode this course it has been fine.It is the same weight as a SS Twister(not a front tyres ass) I run on the back only with a SS explorer on the front.
Cheers,
Malc. |
