Cables. cables. cablesSy

Time to redo all of my cables...I was using Avid Flak Jackets, and I must say that this is the WORST product...anyway, what are my light/ super-duper choices? Ride on Ultras? what else? I am looking for responsive braking and shifting, but with durability. Are the XTR cable units light?

They are the lightest and shift better than anything I have felt. They are expensive but are worth it. They claim to be 30% lighter than shimano cables. They are little machined pieces so the housing will never wear out. The inner wires on shifters are a little oversized which makes shifting even crisper.

I have used all 4(Shimano, Gore, Nokon and Avid), My favorite is the Gore cables.

As for weight savings, the Gore Ultralight der cables are lighter then the Nokon. But the nokon brakes are lighter then the Gore.

So, your choice there.

I have had a set of Gore on my mtn bke for over 5 yrs. And I don't touch them. They are still perfect just like when I put them on.

When I had a brake cable snap, on a downhill, Gore sent me an entire set, der and brake as well as some major cool schwag!!

The Nokon are nice, but require maintence because you have small pieces of aluminum the will freeze up to each other if you don't lube them frequently. I also dislike the fact that since they are under tension, they have a tendency to stay where they were last. Meaning, the bending action of them has a memory.

So, I hope that helps.

Go with gore. They are worth it, no problems with my ultralight derailleur cables. Decided to settle with avid flaks for brakes and I agree, worst feeling cable ever, worse than what they replaced. Now I ended up spending more money by having to replace the flaks when I should have went gore in the first place.

Avids do stink. So do the gore cables. I've used both. I even tried the gore cables twice. Gore cables start out nice... really nice, but after a while that teflon coating gums up and creates problems. XTR cables have some sort of seals in the ferrules that causes a lot of friction. Good ol' fashioned cables and housing work the best. Something I would do on high end bikes when I built them was to solder the ends of the cable instead of using end caps. don't use a blob or anything The solder should almost look non existant. THis allows you to easily remove the cable to clean and re lube it.

What is your method for soldering the cable ends. I have never had success. What kind of iron, solder?

The reason your gore cables sucked was poor installation.

Now, i am not saying you or your mechanic sucks, but, i have been using gore cables for almost 9 yrs. And I have never, and i mean, NEVER had problems.

The reason you are having problems is that the cut of the cable coating wasn't clean enough. And what i mean by clean is that if it has a little almost string when you cut it, you need to cut it again.
What I do is score the coating with a very sharp knife. but I won't use the knife to cut it. I will use the shimano cable cutters and turn the cutters around the cable when i am cutting it. It leaves a very clean even cut. I also put a drop of super glue on the end I cut to make sure the coating doesn't get f'ed up.

I hope that helps make your next install of the best cables made better.

I also agree that Gore cables are the best (at least that I've seen so far). The only complaint I have is that the metal cable end ferrules that come with the cables get grit on them and creak like crazy in my cable stops on the frame. I'm going to switch to the cheap plastic ferrules. Hopefully the plastic ones won't make noise.

I've found that household electrical wire strippers work well for stripping the coating cleanly and easily.
