Which wheels would you recommend?Cross post from wheels...Rude-e

I was looking at these two sets and can't make-up my mind maybe you guys have experience with them. I will be using them for racing and training about 2 times a week. I weigh 220lbs and am light on wheels.
I currently have a set of deore/tioga wheels radialy laced 28 front 2x rear. that have lasted me all year with only a couple of minor trues.
The XTR wheels are a little more $ and weigh a little more, is it worth the extra cash?
The Sun wheels are lighter, cheaper and look to be better for racing. What do you guys recommend?

Sweet set up would be

The back wheel with the XTR hub, would be bullet proof and weighs the same.

Then the front sun wheel for lightness.

Now if they would only let you do that.

That sure would be a VERY nice wheelset wouldnt it?

It seems to me that someone already makes and sells a wheelset in that exact combo! Boy, who could it be????

Oh yeah, Bianchi4me, that guy you THINK knows nothing about wheels!

Best part is I have a close friend that has that EXACT same wheelset, built by B4me, and it has been in loyal trouble-free service for over 4 YEARS. Where can you get wheels that do that? Only from MIKE!

Careful of those Sun 0-degree Lite rims...Wrenchester

Be aware that those Sun rims have a butted seam, not a welded seam. On the front it may not be an issue, but on the rear, especially at your weight, a butted-seam rim may a bit too delicate.

Be careful, also, of claimed weights. I wouldn't be surprised if those wheel weights are calculated from the accumulated manufacturers' claimed weights on each of the components. If that is true, you may find the weight advantage of the Sun wheels evaporates.

Personally, I'd say go for the XTR-X517 set.

At your weight it would be a much better choice.

Look at www.jensonusa.com for the same wheelset for $20 less.

Sometimes Supergo advertises XTR / Famous manufactor wheelsets claiming they cannot disclose the rim manufactor. Those are Bonty Valiants. They are typically $219.00
Man you guys are wealth of knowledge!... thanks for the adviseRude-e

XTR it is! What is the weight on this wheel set? is it the advertised weight of 1740g? Is this weight w/ quick releases?
anything over 1500 is way too heavy. get a 1400ghvy
Oct 29, 2002 6:49 PM
for about $280 and you will appreciate what a big improvement.
don't think i've seen a $280 /1400g wheelset............bogart

I think Shimano includes skewer weights in their hub weights.
Ignore hvy, he obviously didn't read you original post
Those ad weights for the XTR wheels are weirdly heavy.Bianchi4Me

Usually we are busting manufacturers for posting weights that are too optimistic, but in this case, it seems like they are too heavy.

They are advertising them at 780g front and 960g rear.

FRONT:
XTR M950 Hub = 133g
Mavic X517, Black Anodized = 410g (conservative "real world" weight)
32 Alloy Nipples = 11g
Total=554g
That leaves you with 226g for the spokes to hit 780g, which is way too high for DT Competition 14/15s. They are actually only ~190g, even laced three-cross. We assumed the rim was a bit heavier than average, so I'd say that weight was at least 35g too high, and it might be closer to 45g more than actual.

Same story out back:
REAR:
M950 XTR Freehub:311g
X517 black: 410g
Nips: 11g
TOTAL:732g
That leaves you 228g for 190g worth of spokes. I wonder if somebody added up the component weights and incldued the skewer weights with the hubs? If so, the Sun wheels do NOT have the skewers included in thier ad weight, so keep that in mind.
I have those, 517-XTRolder guy

I bought the 517-XTR from Supergo built by Wheelsmith. I weighed them with a digital fishing scale (KMart) and came in both without skewers at 1475 gms.
I don't have any idea if the scale is off or what but was surprised to find out that they weigh less than advertised. I will assume that the weight given includes skewers which they gave me a raincheck because they are out of stock.
The 517-XTR advertised by Jenson ($20 less) have silver rims while supergo has them in gray.

One more place to look...JmZ

Take a look on E-bay. There are some new wheels that pop up on a pretty regular basis. Might even be able to find the same setups listed above.

Most of 'em go for less than mailorder (well as long as they don't have "King" in the title. :) E-bay is (for wheels at least) a buyers market, but ask LOTS of questions.

Of the two builds above, I'd go for the Shimanos. The Sun wheels are pretty good but for racing I'd go with the slightly increased durability, and more importantly the ability to easily replace rims and other parts on the road. It's not anywhere near as bad as a Rolf or Spin, but the thought is still the same. Shimano hubs are everywhere, as are 32 hole rims.

Good luck,

JmZ
