I just tried the Michelin Comp S light yesterday.mine weighed 478g / 480g so slightly above advertized weights.overall width of the Michelin is the same as the Conti Explorer SS but it is bigger because it`s carcass is 50mm wide where the Explorer is just about 47mm.but the Explorer has wider knobs so overall they are the same.the Michelin has a slightly cushier ride because of the bigger volume.it rolls also quiter and slightly faster than the Explorer.I found that the Explorer has slightly better traction in moderate wet/humid terrain than the Michelin.braking traction with the Michelin isn`t that good either.I guess it`s the small knobs that tend to get folded.I`d rate the Michelin a bit faster in dry conditions but it has less traction in the wet.overall i prefer the Explorer because it`s more versatile and for me has the best cornering grip of all XC-tires.the sidewalls of the Conti SS tires are very thin and therefore not recommended in rocky terrain.I can`t comment on wear since i used the Michelins just 1 ride.the Conti however wears pretty fast even though i hardly ever brake slide.

weights:
Explorer SS 440-480g
Michelin 460-480g (i remember MAX commented about some Michelins weighing 457g)
Thanks, one more question?ddb

I currently have comp s, not the lites, and run them between 35-42 with a tube. Can I run the conti's that low. My comps are worn out and i "need" a new pair,. Trying to decide between the 2.

Thanks

I have both the comp s lite and the explorer pro (not ss). I run the explorer pro between 35-42 with with tubes and "no tubes". I think the SS is too thin for that as well as the comp s lite. Also, I concur with the impressions Nino had on these tires which is why I went to explorer pro for better handeling on loose terrain and fast descents as well as breaking. Not as fast rolling but near close and good enough to race with.
I've been running the Explorer SS @ 40 psi......VT Mike

as a front tire with no problems. Using a tube and I weigh 165 lb.
How much do you weigh?Ventanarama

35-42 shouldn't be any problem unless you're a pretty big guy. I run 40-45 with the Explorer SS on the front, and weigh 195. I agree with Nino, excellent all-around XC tire (though a little narrower than I would like). It's a better front tire than rear. If you ride in rocky technical terrain where the sidewall durability of the SS may be an issue then a good combo is the SS in front paired with the Escape Protection in the rear. The Escape makes a better rear tire anyway, and that combo will hold up better.

I also run all my tires at 35 psi.I don`t like very low pressures because they make for unprecise steering and added rolling resistance.grip level at 35 psi is good enough for me.as i said already the SS tires have thin sidewalls so in rocky terrain they are not your first choice.

I also run those tires with the ECLIPSE-Tubelesskit with great results.so far i tried the Michelin with tubes only.

Thanks again. I weigh 160 and ride in the mid west, no long climbs or downhills
but plenty of short steep climbs, lots of ravines. Plenty of roots and rocks, but mostly
baby heads not the sharp stuff you guys have. I have had Mich on my bikes for the few years
but I think I am ready for a change. I want the ss or lites so i can take a few more grams of my
steed.

Don't have the SS models but run the pro-tection Contis (explorer front / escape rear) at 40 lbs each with Maxxis Flyweight tubes. No problems to date, thought of going tubeless but weight diff is not that much. Weighing in at 190-195 (pending beer and pizza fix) on Intense Tracer
