| Cycle Dynamics responds to my email......................... | tankhead10 Oct 30, 2002 4:53 PM | | I received an e-mail from a gentleman named Paul from CD and he let me know that you can buy their products directly through them. I was interested in the four bolt (64)22 tooth 6/4 titanium inner chainring. I have been having some chainsuck problems with my FSA inner ring. No big deal, it was bound to happen with the aluminum inner ring. $33 including shipping from Canada. They accept MC, Visa, and Amex. I e-mailed him back about the compatibility with the King hubs and the 6/4 ti cassette. I am thinking that the 6/4 ti cassette will eat right through the alloy hub body on the King hub. But it doesn't hurt to ask. I will let you guys know the deal. BTW Paul responded in less than 24 hours! :) |

Individual cogs will chew straight through the cassette body for sure. If the larger cogs were pinned together ala shimano style, it wouldn't give you any trouble. I believe all the cycle dynamics cogs are individual.

| I have one of those granny gears | Sunny Oct 30, 2002 7:10 PM | | been using the same one for years and it barely shows any wear. As far as cogs and King hubs, the Aluminum hub body is only rated for pinned cogsets. The last 3 cogs on my cassette caused some nicks on the splines...imagine the damage a larger cog would do with the extra torque. CK has a steel version of the hub but that would kind of negate the weight savings... |
| Hold that order! | pedalAZ Oct 31, 2002 4:56 AM | | Was moments away from placing an order for the Action Tec cassette, to go on a Hugi 240 hub. I didn't mind having to replace the Gold Tec cassette experiment, but I'll be damned if I'm going to save 20 grams on a cassette only to have it destroy my rear wheel.
Sunny, I don't know you too well from the board, so could you enrich this thought a little bit more, please? |
| DT Swiss concurs with Sunny - loose cogs will bite the hub body | pedalAZ Oct 31, 2002 8:16 PM | | Got the official response from DT Swiss. They think I could end up with a situation where the cog won't come off because it is dug into the hub body. Not good. |
| The "no loose cogs on aluminum splines" | Sunny Oct 31, 2002 10:41 PM | | thing came from the CK manual, if I remember right. Actually read the manual (for once) for the hubs when I got them a few years ago. Figured after spending so much $$$ on them, I'd better make sure I don't mess them up by accident ;-) In the pic, you can see the nicks to the spines from one of the last few loose cogs.
I've been lurking (occasionally posting) here for a year or two now. Haven't done much upgrading to my bike recently so not much to "talk" about. Besides, this place felt like a school yard lately.

| No individual cogs w/aluminum hubs? | B R H Oct 30, 2002 10:37 PM | | Makes sense... I had no idea! That really reduces my options. I had been considering the Cycle Dynamics and Action-tec cassettes, but both use individual cogs. I'm not giving up my hubs (King).
Why doesn't someone go into the business of recycling the Shimano alloy carriers and putting these Ti rings on them? Seems like an untapped market for the Ti cog manufacturers to me. All they'd have to do is drill out the rivets, cut their cogs to fit, and rivet them in place. Hmmm... |
| There are 1-piece ti cassettes | ®i© Wi©to® Oct 30, 2002 11:13 PM | | I know of one, at least. Kocmo, a Russian company I think (former military contractor) makes a 1-piece nitrided ti cassette. 11-32t only. |
| Ti cogs on aluminum carrier... | Sunny Oct 30, 2002 11:36 PM | | isn't that just the XTR cassette? :-) The original XTR cassette had bolted-on cogs on the carrier. A couple of the screws on mine kept coming loose....probably why they went the rivet route later.
There is an advantage to removable cogs though...

| Ti cogs on aluminum carrier... | B R H Oct 31, 2002 9:01 AM | | I was thinking all cogs could be Ti vs. just the big 3 or 4. Having replaceable cogs would be nice assuming they would stay on. On my 12/34 XTR, the 4 Ti cogs are in great shape, but the steel ones are all mushroomed. I've considered trying to make a Ti cog cassette using the Shimano carrier I have (when it's worn out... soon), but I'm pretty sure I'm going to switch to 8 speed when I replace my cassette. Maybe after than one wears out I'll try replacing all the cogs with Ti ones.
Doesn't this seem like a reasonable service for those places to offer though? It's like cassette repair/upgrade. I was thinking there must be a good reason (Shimano patents perhaps?) that these Ti cog companies don't make their own alloy carriers. Maybe the Ti really doesn't last on the smaller cogs. I just have a hard time believing that though. I suppose it's more likely labor costs are too high to make it worthwhile.
So how much does that carrier you have weigh? I assume you tried loctite on the bolts? |
| Ti cogs on aluminum carrier... | Sunny Oct 31, 2002 5:40 PM | | I don't know what the carrier weighs...didn't have easy access to postal scale and it didn't really matter anyway as I weighed the whole system all cogs and lockring.
Yes, lock-tite did keep the screws in tight but only after I took everything apart and cleaned it really well...chain lube doesn't mix with lock-tite too well :-) |
| Here is a picture of the Kocmo | Anders Oct 31, 2002 1:43 AM | | Kocmo is a german company. Their homepage is "www.kocmo.de". You can order online. The titancasette should weigh about 200grams and is a 12-34T. It is also available in 11-23 and 12-23 if you are into that. |
| Nice... | B R H Oct 31, 2002 9:12 AM | | Thanks for the link. Very expensive though at about $220. Where did you find the weight? I also noticed that they do offer 11/32 and will make custom ratios as well. |
| Anders | ®i© Wi©to® Nov 1, 2002 11:22 AM | | The October Bike Magazin listed it as being produced in Russia. Is Kocmo just the importer / brand name? |
