Zonic Man,

I noticed quite a few posts ago, that you were looking for new wheels, I am curious what ones you chose.

I am also looking for new wheels and am curious which ones you got and how you liked them, if you have tried or gotten them yet.

I am looking to build a set up but not super sure which ones I am going to use.

I was just curious,

Andrew

After consulting some well-respected wheel builders, I decided on a custom built set.

Note: I am 205, former DHer (reformed? Nah...) who rides VERY technical XC with drops of up to 5" with transition on my hardtail xc bike. Basically, if there is a rock, I have a tendency to jump it/hit it rather go around it.

That being said, I went with the following:

The wheels were built by Michael, head mechanic at American Classic.

Velocity Synergy AYSM rims (which allowed for higher spoke tension and a nearly dishless rear wheel)

American Classic Hubs (I chose these because they were way lighter than other comparable hubs, and at the right price compared to king or other offerings. I could have gotten a set of custom kings to be nearly as light from King w/ custom ti and various aluminum bits, but I woulda thrashed them pretty handily. Plus, a friend of mine has been riding the amclassic rear hub for quite a while and is WAY more the rider than I will ever be...and hasn't overhauled them for 6 months.)

DT Revolution spokes up front w/ AmClassic Alloy Nipples

DT Revolution rear non-drive side/DT competition DB rear drive side w/ alloy nipples.

AmClassic Ti Skewers

Stan's "molded" rim strips w/ removable cores and various WTB tires.

I just mounted everything up alright w/ the help of 2 phone calls to "Stan the Man" himself...but in the end, the tires are holding air, so all's good!

First ride to be this weekend, we'll see how it goes!

(BTW: Weight of wheelset w/o strips of skewers was 730 front/870 rear for a total of 1600 grams even.)
I don't see those rimstrips on Stan's siteAZ Steelhead

Are they available separately or only in the kits?

They were brand new at Interbike. Quite different than the old style (I have both now).
