Conti with eclipse - first installation questions(9 posts)

Conti with eclipse - first installation questionsspangelsaregreat
Jan 25, 2003 9:05 AM
Hi,

I have just finished installing a Conti Explorer Duraskin on the front and a Conti Escape Duraskin on the rear on Mavic 317 using the Eclipse tubeless system. The wheels and the tyres are all brand new.

I have a couple of queries for the experts out there.

When I installed the front tyre I noticed a very small tear (about 3mm) at the join of the rim strip. Once I had the tyre on I tried pumping it up without the latex and it immediately leaked at that bit of the strip. I put the latex in and went up with not problems and seems to have sealed fine.

Will the sealant be able to maintain the seal at the small tear or will it leak on any impacts? Maybe John from JustRidingAlong.com who sold me the kits can comment.

The rear tyre went on like a dream. I was even able to pump it up to 50 psi without sealant. I then put the sealant in and it immediately began leaking out of the sidewall. This went on for a few minutes then seamed to stop. I took the bike for the short ride as recommmeded and when I stopped I noticed the tyre was still trying to seal itself at a couple of points on the sidewall ) the bead seal seems okay. It has stopped now and I have left both tyres at about 30-40 psi. I am a bit concerned that this tyre will not seal properly due to the side wall leakage.

Is this normal?

Is the reason for leaving it overnight to allow time for the sealant to harden?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Regards.

nowhere does it say tires have to be inflated BEFORE inserting the sealant!

by doing this you avoid that the sealant comes between rim and tire and therefore the seal isn`t that good.that`s what makes it leak slowly.what you have now is basically just the lip of the rimstrip sealing against the inner lip of the tire.usually you would have a much larger surface acting as a seal, all the way up to the edge of the rim...I hope you understand what i want to say.

so - just let out all the air, pull both sides of the tires sidewalls back in the rimbead and rotate the tire as you should have done the first time.that way you enable the sealant to get between rim and tire.AFTER that rotating/shaking inflate the tire and you will have a perfect seal almost instantly.

that small cut shouldn`t bother you.it shouldn`t be there but it won`t affect the sealing.I assume you have put the double sided adhesive tape underneath as shown in the instructuions, didn`t you?it is mandatory!
latex for tyre changesHans-Joerg

Hello
i am doing marathon races and have just installed the tublesskit. My question: If i'd like to change the tyre is there some latex i can buy extra (without kit) or even some cheaper sealant (from automobiles or so) that works with the eclipse tubelesskit.
Thanks for help!
spare ECLIPSE Sealant...nino

yes - you can get ECLIPSE sealant seperately.`

HANS-JÖRG sounds pretty german, doesn`t it?if you are german then TUNE is the Eclipse distributor.just send them a mail and ask about some extra sealant.if i`m right the e-mail is:
info@tune.de

DON`T try any homemade latex mixture because it won`t seal as well as the original stuff.there are additives in the sealant which really make a difference.anyway - right now with freezing temperatures out there you can`t use homemade scoop.it would freeze.the original sealant does a much better job.I also tried about every possible alternative but none comes close.

Hi,

Just checked the Escape rear tyre which was leaking out of the sidewalls after 3 hours. It had lost air and only had about 20 psi in it. I have pumped it upto 40 psi again. Fingers crossed, hopefully it wasn't a waste of £30 for this tyre.

I will try what you are suggesting Nino, I guess it makes sense now you explain why. Just to curious for my own good. Never thought that inflating the tyre before would have an affect. It does still seem to be leaking out of the sidewall as opposed to the bead but I will try reindlating it.

Cheers

Tried as you suggested Nino, letting the air out and reseating the tyre. Seems to have worked okay. Will leave it overnight and hopefully it will be inflated in the morning.

Thanks again.

Try www.justridingalong.com for spare sealant. Not sure if other sealant will work.

Nino,

I am afraid both wheels lost their air by this morning.

The front (the one with the small tear on the rim strip) appears to have had a sudden loss of air at the tear. There was a gloop of sealant over the rim and the tyre at that point and it had gone completely flat.

The rear has again dropped to 20 psi. When I reinflated it it was definately leaking at the sidewall. I could see a small bubble of sealant where is was leaking out.

I have released all the air out of both tyres and reseated the bead in the centre of the rim. I then spun the wheel and gave it another good shake to spread the sealant over the tyre. I then reinflated both tyres. They seem to have sealed okay and went for a short ride.

Will have to see if this works.

Is it possible Nino that the Duraskin side wall is porous and will seep air?

Regards

maybe it`s really those Duraskin sidewalls..i don`t know.I never had a similar thing happen and believe me,i mounted A LOT of different tires...
so far the only tire that i encountered which made similar problems was a Conti Explorer Supersonic of my friend.that tire leaked right through the sidewalls and you could clearly see the sealant/air coming out of some bigger pores.then it`s best to let the pressure drop until there is no more air coming out there.by rotating/shaking the tire you make sure that sealant comes to that pore.let then sit the wheel for a while, later repeat that process again in order that a thin latex skin forms in the inside.now inflate again.not too high pressure though as high pressure might re-open that pore again.once the tire has been ridden for a while the pore should be sealed.

I don`t know how big that tear is on your rimstrip.if you really think it`s a problem get a new one.i`m sure you will get it for free.
It's the duraskin sidewall.....Zonic Man
