| American Classic Wheelsets/Hubs: Good or Not? | MyIntensity Jan 25, 2003 9:20 PM | | The reviews on this website were not very good. Many complained about the hubs spilling grease and not being durable. Any other opinions out there? Thinking of their Ultralight wheelset. Less expensive than the Kings but maybe not as reliable? |

Both sets are very lightweight, and have been proved to be reliable. ALWAYS take the reviews on this website with a grain of salt. Good luck with whatever option you choose.

| I have two wheelsets w/ AC disc hubs.... | wfl3 Jan 26, 2003 4:04 AM | | ...and they have been very good so far. Most of the complaints I've seen here seem to be about the older grease port version AC hubs - bearings not sealed, grease spewing all over, etc, etc.
The newer hubs (V4 I believe) have no grease ports and use sealed bearings which are inexpensive (see oddsandendos.com) and easy to replace. I replaced the outer freehub bearing in my oldest set after a muddier than usual season of riding - no problems w/ the engagement mech or anything else so far. |
| Both mtb disc and road have held up great | dirtdad Jan 26, 2003 7:03 AM | | I am an AC hub (and rim) lover. It is a great product and I like having something different from everyone else. Compared to the Mavic/Shimano/etc prebuilt stuff, you can build wheels with standard parts that outperform the popular prebuilt stuff for way less, you can choose and build every piece of them yourself, you can mix and match other brands of components, etc.
I have a rear AC mtb disc hub and AC road hubs. I run a lefty, or I would have a front AC mtb hub, too. Compared to my previous Hugi 240 disc, the AC has been lower maintenance and more durable than the Hugi.
I am currently revamping my front wheels with the newest generation of road hubs. My road hubs are the grease port versions, and have proven to be far more durable than their appearence suggests. I am revamping my wheels because I was hard on them and munged the rims, but the AC hubs are going strong. My existing rims are dented out of round and true and ground up from emergency stopping on the rim, but the hubs have gone strong.
AC is a very responsive company. They answer the phone and reply to email, and offer upgrades when they improve their product. I find that amazing. Who else does that? Software companies, sometimes. They have consulted with me on the phone, shared wisdom about wheelbuilding, etc. They are cycling fanatics and great fun to work with. |
| Both mtb disc and road have held up great | Steve A Jan 26, 2003 1:54 PM | | I'll second that. There product rocks, I use the Am Classic 350 setup for training wheels and the carbon tubular for the race wheels. I to run a lefty and cant use there front hub,I'm using the DT'Swiss C-Dale SI lefty hub with a Mavic 317 rim and Marwi Ti spokes, very nice set up, in the back I use the Hugi 240 disc with the Mavic 317 rim and the Marwi spokes, if I did not have to use the Lefty I would just use the Am Classic all around they cant be beat. I also had great service from the Tune wheels, worth a look but you will spend a lot more money, I think there is not a better wheel both weight wise and value for the dollor than Am Classic. Ride On, Dirt Dad what is your take on all this Cannondale stuff flying around? This may explain why the team bike never showed up this week, Hummmm |
| Great service, great support, great people, great product. | Zonic Man Jan 27, 2003 8:33 AM | | They really stand behind their stuff. 2 sets of wheels in my family that have been good for going on about 9 months now, of 4x a week riding. Excellent stuff. AmClassic is very responsive as well. |
