I'm about to purchase an '03 NRS 2 for use as my light duty trail bike. I plan on swapping out the fork for a Fox Float 100, and the wheels for a a king/mavic 3.1 ust setup. What else can I do to save those precious grams. I would like to keep it stiff over ultra light weight/noodley feeling. Whats is the most weight I can save for the least amount of cash? Thanks guys.

BTW, Here is the parts spec on the bike:

Great, to see someone else on this board with same spec bike (Tho mine is a relativly new 2002 model) and aspirations as I too have.

The first think to go was those damm pedals, they weigh alot and are not the best, I have a pair of Shimano M959's but you could give the Egg beaters a go. My next change was to Stans rims strips and latex (The newer version) which I am very very happy with!!!

As far as the drive train go, I am just about to replace the cassette, cranks, BB, Rear mech with XTR, I had to replace my front mech and did so with an XT. Breakleavers are XTR as the Avids wore out after a fall.

The next changes for me are King Hubs in red with X3.1 rims, and then a little after that I wouldnt mind getting say an SLR saddle and possibly a nice flat handlebar (Carbon Easton) together with Titec pork rinds.

As far as the rest of the parts go I just cant justify buying new hadlebars, seatposts etc unless I can find great deals and the weight savings will be only marginal etc. My bike does feature the Maniotu Black fork which is on the heavy side but it does work like a dream, If I am to change will do so but to like Fox or even black ellite as they are really damm good!
Here are some suggestions.francisco

Hi
If you want so shave some weight, you can replace the shimano hg-50 cassete, with a xt cassete or xtr (xt is cheaper). The hg 50 weights 330gr aprox, while the xt weights 265gr aprox.
You can get some avid Ti levers, the weight savings is not much but for the price, they`re OK.
As the other post said, those pedals are HEAVY, you can get some eggbeaters.
Well that`s it for now...
hope that helps
take care and enjoy that SWEET ride
bye
One more thoughTM

This is only an idea but you want to purchase a brand new bike and then swap out parts like fork, wheels etc etc, perhaps it may be better but a little more costly to get a new say NRS 1/Air frame off ebay for around $700 and then you have yourself $800 more US to spend on parts and then the additional amount you intended to spend on fork (say $400us plus $400 us for the wheels)

I dont know where you are from, I am in OZ and am assuming you are in the US so if you do the math and can find good deal you may be able to build a kick ass bike from scratch....

Offcourse easier said then done I bet! LOL!
Cheers, any more questions etc email me!
the std post and stem are heeeeeeavy on the NRSDuckman

yup on the wheels of course. that crank is made over seas for the RF name, but its not the best, and it may have a steel granny. also of course the eggs are a cheap and big weight loss as well.
