| mtbr has an advantage when switch to racing road bike | jamesdirt Jan 28, 2003 2:16 PM | | Anyone noticed that mtb racing normally do very well when racing from a 23lbs fsb to a lightweight 14lb road bike? A few mtb racing buddies outraced some of the road racers. That's probrobly why it's good for road biker ride mtb to balance out their strength. After riding 60miles on road bikes, many of us still have energy to ride 20mile mtb trail. Life if great when you have a light bike. |

However, they are consistently smoked in there tuesday night crit. race (road), usually finishing in the middle of the pack. |
| well, yes and no | weiwentg Jan 29, 2003 6:27 AM | | if my best friend and I had gone into road biking at the same time, he from MTBing and me from running, he would have had the initial advantage. if you're talking about experienced mountain bikers competing against experienced road racers, it would depend on how experienced the mountain biker is, but they would not necessarily have the advantage (Landis, Martinez, etc).
if you're talking about crossing over to cyclocross from mountain biking then the mountain bikers definitely have an advantage, especially on techincal courses. all those roadies don't know how to turn ;) but seriously, the Michigan state cross championships had a LOT of twisty turns. this did slow down the pure roadies, to the point where I finished 10th on a very flat course. I am 120lbs. all the guys and most of the ladies outmassed me. |
| "heavy" road bike has advantages when switching to.... | Nigel' Jan 29, 2003 4:57 PM | | "heavy" road bike has advantages when switching to.... light mtb.
Likewise, I ride a heavy roadbike, at 21 lbs, its still fast, just I have to work harder. Then when I get on the lightweight hardtail, which is even lighter...I fly.
For me, I love riding road and I do alot but not competitively, and I can still keep up with the guys on -17lb road bikes.
and thats my biased opinion |
