| Eclipse latex=Stan´s latex? Wich tires work best? | Batas Jan 30, 2003 1:59 AM | | A lbs dealer told me that the eclipse and the Stan´s latex are the same...? Wich non-ust tires work best? I have X-Max UST, do I have to use some kind of rim strip or only a non-ust tire and latex will do? |
| re: Eclipse latex=Stan´s latex? Wich tires work best? | j w Jan 30, 2003 3:08 AM | | They are definitely not literally the same.... if he meant that they worked similarly then yes my experience suggests that they do. Both are far superior to just normal latex you would buy in an art shop.
As far as tyres go, the very best most reliable tyres I have used are any Tiogas, and Schwalbe Jimmys, with zero failures between them. Also good are Hutchinsons and continental. Panaracer trailblasters are very poor, and the FireXC are not much better. IRC are good. Specialized are ok but tend to deflate over a day or two....I don't know why. They pump right up again though. I don't know about the more specialist tyres, like fast freds or conti twister supersonics, as there isn't much call for them round here!

| Funny....... | KMan Jan 30, 2003 9:35 AM | | My experience using Panaracer Trailblasters 1.8, 1.95 and a 2.1 have been nothing but exellent. Instant inflation, immediate sealing and pretty much 0 psi leackage over several weeks. So far it is BY FAR the easiest tires I have ever had to seal.
Your statement should be worded not "Panaracer trailblasters are very poor", but I have had problems sealing my Panaracer Trailblsaters. That way you are talking about and reviewing your personal experiences and not the overall quality and ability of a specific brand of tire.
just my $.02

| Trailblasters w/ NoTubes | dreampath Jan 30, 2003 2:22 PM | | I'm big on Trailblasters myself, but have yet to install Stan's Kit which I have sitting around, as flats are never a problem for me, and I've been running them at 40-50 lbs. I was wondering what pressure you run yours at w/ NoTubes, and if you feel like the rolling resistance is lessened just from the lack of tubes. Thanks much. |
| Trailblasters w/ NoTubes | KMan Jan 31, 2003 7:14 AM | | I generally run all my tires around 45/48 psi. I'm about 185 lbs and would rather have a harsher ride than any type of flat. I have been running Stan's system for over 2 years now so I have no comparison on using the tires with tubes. I was using the Trailblasters for muddy conditions and my winter riding. Not the best in mud as they do tend to hold the mud, grip is fine, they just dont shed it well. Overall I think they are a great tire for the grip vs weight.

| trailblasters... expanded. | j w Jan 31, 2003 3:49 AM | | ok, yes I should have been more specific, sorry. What I should have said is, I installed the Trailblasters no problem, as you say they go up pretty easy. But I had continuous problems with scuffs and tears in the sidewalls, like every couple of rides I would be sticking a tube in and having to fix the sidewall or tread surface with a patch when rocks cut in. And heaven forbid I actually bottom-out the rim on a rock because it would pinch right through the tyre. I only have had so many problems with trailblasters, not to mention their distinct lack of grip (well what did I expect with those massive featureless knobbles?!?!).
In my opinion, the trailblasters are not recommended if you ride somewhere rocky.
I am fairly sure it's not "just me" as I have run all sorts of other tyres including the very thin and light Tioga 1.8sl on very rocky terrain with zero problems. I just don't feel that Panaracer casings are strong enough.
hope this clarifies my point

| trailblasters... expanded. | dreampath Jan 31, 2003 12:45 PM | | That's funny. I think they have excellent grip. |
| trailblasters... expanded. | j w Feb 2, 2003 3:00 PM | | mmm
I guess that at the end of the day it depends on the terrain you ride. The stuff I was riding them on (uk mud and dry Spanish rubble), they didn't perform well in comparison with other tyres.

| Wich continental... | Batas Jan 30, 2003 11:24 AM | | tires are ok? Explorer supersonic is ok? (440gr advrt.) |
| Which continental... | nino Jan 30, 2003 2:18 PM | | the Explorer supersonic is about the only tire that i had problems with.not all, since mine went on easily and hold air.but a friend of mine got a pair with pretty porous sidewalls.they had pores where the sealant would literally spray out when the tire was inflated.my experience tells me how to seal sucha porous tire but any "normal" user would have a hard time.one other thing to make sure is to wash the inside of brand-new conti tires with some soap befre installing them.lately they have a really shiny layer of silicone inside from the producton process which seems to make for a bad adhesion of the sealant.by washing the inside first you get rid of that silicone or whatever it is. Twister Supersonics mount easily though. |
| Batas, They are basically the same thing. I see no differenc in | DIRT BOY Jan 30, 2003 3:25 AM | | sealing properties of either one.
If you are using the CrossMax I would suggest the Eclipse UST kit or Stan's UST valves with some Weather Stripping to mount the tires easily. The removable valve cores help with adding latex and the UST kit or weather stripping will will in the channel on the UST rims allowing the tire to mount easier and to inflate with basically no loss of latex.
if you need more info e-mail me and i will send you pictures of the valves and the weather stripping. |
| @ Dirt Boy. Rim Trip or not ? | Gary Jan 30, 2003 9:11 AM | | Dirt Boy, do you suggest using a rim strip or not with the crossmax UST wheels ?. Is is worth to add 55 grams per wheels? If that can help, I am 145 lbs.
Please email me your picture of the Weather Stripping you are talking about.
Thanks ! |
| Gary, are you in the UK? If so get a Eclipse UST kit... | DIRT BOY Jan 30, 2003 11:32 AM | | This will make the tire easier to inflate, plus you have the removable valve core.
Send me you're e-mail for a pic of the weather stripping.

| Gary, are you in the UK? If so get a Eclipse UST kit... | Gary Jan 30, 2003 1:14 PM | | No, I Live in Canada, so getting the Eclipse or no-tubes system is costly.

| DirtBoy, I have 03 Crossmax SLs, so can you please send... | malcolm Jan 31, 2003 12:00 AM | | me the pics also to:lenamalc@paradise.net.nz
The distributor of GT in Auckland NewZealand is looking at bringing in Eclipse so what will I need to order if I want to use std. tyres with my UST rims, and are there any drawbacks that you have encountered.
Thanks, Malcolm. |
| I will send you Gary and You the pics this weekend... | DIRT BOY Jan 31, 2003 4:58 AM | | If you can the the Eclispe kit then go for it! You will have the easier valve and a stripping that will last longer then weather stripping.
The weather stripping has to be replaced everytime you change your tires. This can be found at any Hardware Strore. I don't know what you guys would callit "Down Under" but it's used to seal windows and doors form the elements. It a long soft and spongy strip of foam. Understand?
I will send pic later.

| I will send you Gary and You the pics this weekend... | malcolm Feb 1, 2003 2:43 AM | | Thanks.I understand what you mean.It is a foam stuff with sticky back used around doors and windows.
What does the "stripping" do?
Cheers,
Malcolm. |
| yes! It will allow you to mount the tire very easly and not have | DIRT BOY Feb 1, 2003 4:21 AM | | the trie's bead sitting in the channel while latex is leaking out. See a tubeless tire will start to inflate well and push the tire beads out of that channel. Most people using regular tires and latex find it hard to get the bead to sit snug against the rim on a UST rim becuase of this channel. Not you can mount the tire, inflate slighty without the latex to get the bead snug against the rim. No add latex trhough the valve then pump away. 99% of the time no soap in need around the bead and almost no latex will spill out!
