Need Extralite "The stem" tightening torques...CODMAN
Apr 10, 2003 7:36 PM
Guys, I can't find my Extralite instruction sheets giving the proper tightening torques for the bar clamp and steerer tube bolts on my Extralite "The stem".

Does anybody have these handy?

Thanks a million!

not exactly what you want but.....berni

...on my Extralite stuff, and similar small bolt equipment, I stick the long end of the allen key in the socket and tighten as hard as I can by holding the small end.

The lack of leverage means I cannot overtighten, and I find it is always tight enough.
Oh, and also.....CODMAN

Thanks Berni. But I have a Torque wrench for that. It's just I don't have the numbers!!!! Doh!

Also, the handlebar clamp needs to be tightened in a special way if I recall. You need to completely tighten either the top or the bottom bolts on the clamp, and then tighten the two others to the appropriate torque. But which ones? The top first? Or the bottom first?? Damn! Moving last year, I can't find these papers!!!

Dirt Boy, do you have the uinstructions?

Thanks again all!!

These are "UltraStem" Torque Specs though.

Steer Clamp Bolts: 28in/lbs or 3.5Nm

Clamp Face: 20in/lbs or 2.5Nm

These are "moderate maximum" torque specs

Clamp Face:
Tighten the upper bolts completely then unscrew one full turn.
Then tighten lower bolts equally to the recommend torque.

Many thanks Dirt Boy!!!!!!! nmCODMAN

the front plate of my ultrastem was apparently overtorqued by myself and thats why it snapped in two places!
Yeah Marco, that's why I wanted the specs before tightening! nmCODMAN

firstly sergio at extralite has sent me an e-mail confirming that he has recieved the brocken plate and has tried to reproduce these cracks on a new plate without success which means that he doesn't understand what happened (and he still seems unwilling to answer my question of :provided i follow the instructions precisely of installing the bolts with an allan key (he says that i dont have to buy a torque wrench)will he guarantee that the plate wont snap again with possible greater consequences?)
secondly if i dont use the ultrastem then i will stick to my pace stem@140 grms
