Can I get lighter than Marta SL's??(8 posts)

Can I get lighter than Marta SL's??10kman

I have to decide on a disc brake system (not going vee's for sure at this point).

The Marta SL's are supposed to be the lightest according to my readings. But, can I get a lighter setup than the marta's if i go with like avid mechs with a superlight brake lever??

i'm not sold on the marta sl's, i think they cost way too much, and you don't get the hayes type of performance, just from what i'm reading. that's why i'm thinking of the avid's, maybe they are just as good, and i can make them lighter, and better yet, no oil....

any ideas??

Thanks all....

I thought of that with the Avids...DIRT BOY

Avid Brakes w/ Alum Rotors
Paul Love Levers

still not as light as Marta SL or B4 SL :-(

Close and easier to maintain with nice braking performance and cost.

I still might go that way...

The Avids won't even come close in terms of weight...wfl3

...as just the caliper/rotor ends are around 350 grams each if I recall correctly (weightweenies is down right now) and you still need to add the cables and levers.

As far as the lightest setup, I'm pretty sure it's the new Formula B4SLs. They're lighter and probably less expensive than the Marta SLs.

the marta SL's are kind of a waste of money. most of their weight savings is from the wavy rotors, which come with the regular martas now. The SL's have the carbon levers, but that only makes them 10 grams lighter than the regular martas.

Brake Rotor Magura Marta Disc 156g
Brake Rotor Magura Marta SL Disc (107, 109) avg: 108g
Brake Rotor Hayes 6" Rotor (113, 114) avg: 113.5 g

so as you can see, I replaced my sl rotors for hayes rotors, I only gained a total of 11g~!! I think the haye's rotors brake better as well. aluminum rotors and "organic pads" are around 250.00 total EXTRA~! that's rediculous. the B4's have a freakishly small and puny lever and I dont' know how durable that is. the carbon lever blades stop any play that develops in the levers compared to the normal martas. not to mention they're styl'n. wait for the sl's to come on MTBr and snatch them. I got mine decently cheap on here. instead of 600.00 for front and rear, I got mine for 350 front and rear. brand new. I love them~! the stopping power is perfect for XC/ light DH. I don't want anything freakishly strong 'cause I don't need it and I don't weigh but 150 pounds. maybe if I were 200 pounds doing DH, then maybe I'd go with hayes. but that's okay. I'm loyal to Magura. I hope this helps.

If you didn't even USE brake levers with an Avid setup you'd still be more weight (at 865g) that even plain old Marta (at 747g) not to mention the SL version.

But you'd still be waaaaay over the weight of the lightest disc setup of the moment - Formula B4SL at 630g.

Weighed 'em all myself.

Front Hayes HMX-1 Disc weighs...VetteRacer

363 grams... with Avid AD-1.0L lever, cable and housing (long enough to fit 7" triple clamp, and 2" riser bars).
That is without fork adapter, or rotor though... But is with bolts that bolt to adapter (my fork has custom adapter, so not good sample to weigh)

Caliper along (no lever/housing/cable/bolts, etc) is 213grams.
That lever is 92grams. 15g for the two bolts. and 43g for the cable/housing about 3 foot worth.

Just posting weight, they arent too heavy doesnt seem... Might not be too light either.. Not sure what most ppl weigh their setups to include.

As for personal use (these are borrowed brakes). I prefer hydro brakes any day. The Maguras Louise on my trials bike stop excelent, and the Hayes Purples do about the same... The Hayes HMX-1's.. just dont quite cut it compared to either. And honestly, I prefer the Magura HS11/22/33 on my XC bike to these hayes.. Cables just plane suck :P
my 3 cents

the formula b4 sl are the lightest discs you can buy. i think i even saw a pair in the marketplace for a smokin' price (no, they are not mine)! i have also heard good things about the brakes themselves and customer support (of course, with dealig with mr. brakemiester and all).
