| Help builing a race specific bike(forks/Gen Advice?)? | Trevor! Apr 13, 2003 5:46 PM | | Hey Guys,
When it comes to asking about building a bike, I really only appreciate comments in here as alot of people have already offered me some good advice.
I have a few questions regarding building up a light weight bike specifically for racing with. I currently own a Giant NRS which has been built up on a tight budget. I am now planning a second NRS to be used for racing on. Keep in mind I wont be building this bike for some months as winter is just around the corner in Australia.
Here are some questions I would like to ask:
* What is a good light weight fork that will be suited to disk brakes. I weigh just on 70Kgs (or about 148Lbs). Is a Sid World Cup 2003 model too flexy? What about the other Sids?
* What is the ride quality of a SID, is it relativly plush, or quite stiff performance wise
* Just how felxy is a Sid?
* What are good for options? Is 80mm a must when racing?
* I currently run XTR and cannot complain whats the Sram X.0 stuff like?
* Crank options: FSA Carbon?, 2003 XTR?, Race face Next Lps? Will be running 2x9
Below is a worksheet I have been working on. Some of these weights were copied from a build up below on this page (Racer X v2.0 as Weight weenies is down)
* General Comments would be great/ Any advice etc would be really appreciated
Thanks

front dereillier as these are lighter and go for maybe some FSA carbon cranks(5xarm) or RF Turbine or LP together with American classic ISIS BB and run 29x coda ring. This set up would be cheaper and lighter than 03 XTR.- but the XTR cranks are sweet though.
Yeah sids are a bit flexy but they are tolerable and of course the lightest. The fox is a sweet fork and reasonably light.
Your weight I would go sid if you want out and out lightest.
Just be prepared to take out a small mortgage to pay for it all.
Cheers,
Malcolm. |
| I was adding it up today... Umm | Trevor! Apr 14, 2003 2:10 AM | | Am I kidding myself or what! The frame itself I thought was overpriced, and then a Fox FX80 was $1900+ damm!
Is it just me or are we ripped of in Australiasia? Things are some much more expensive over here, even when you take into consideration Taxation and the exchange rate.
I think I will ebay some parts if I can and also get some parts in the US when the $$$ is going good!
Think I got to re think some things! Saw some 03 and O2 XTR stuff on ebay at good prices! |
| Trevor, contact me about the 03 XTR stuff off this board. (nm) | DIRT BOY Apr 14, 2003 4:04 AM | | |
| Some thoughts | ?®i© Wi©to® Apr 14, 2003 5:14 AM | | I'd forget about the Next LPs and get Turbine LP's instead - they're a lot cheaper and weigh only a tiny bit more. As for a bracket, go Shook 108 mm if you can find one; otherwise an RF Signature XS in 108 mm is the only affordable option. Either that or get an FSA 2x9 crank with Shimano BB unit.
As far as the SIDs go, two friend of mine have the World Cup. One runs v-brakes, the other XTR discs. The fork is noticeable stiffer than the '02 SL/SL Ti/SL Carbon, but you can really feel it flex during braking, with discs. Also, after 6 months there was noticable play on the fork.
If this bike is race-only, and coursers aren't extremely harsh, a SID would be fine. If you have something more demanding, look at a Manitou Skareb, or a Rock Shox Duke with dual air chambers. |
| Tell that to my bike. | Zonic Man Apr 14, 2003 11:49 AM | | They seem to be getting along just great. |
| I think that was meant for that specific bike... | DIRT BOY Apr 14, 2003 12:08 PM | | According to Shimano it works fine with a 44T ring. They say 46-48T better with the 02 and older cranks and the 03 with any compact rings.
My ride seems to shift better with a 02 XT than the 02 XTR for adjustment wise. But XT shifting is not as good as the 02 XTR.
When my warranty 02 FD gets back, I will try again. The chain kept jumping over my big ring to the outside. My have been a problem with it.
If not, then I will suck up the few extra grams and go with the 03 XTR.

| Thanks for the comments. | Trevor! Apr 14, 2003 1:32 PM | | I dont think the SID will be an option, and thats because although its a race bike - Id still like to be able to ride it hard and be happy that it will ride reliably.
WIll give some thought to the Shareb.
Look at some RFcranks too I think!
Thanks |
| Hey dude | Duckman Apr 14, 2003 5:53 PM | | ...don't get crazy and blow all your cash like i do. hell, i've always been bad with compulsiveness. we all love the cool stuff, but in reality and as you prob know as well, the bike will not be that much faster as say compared to what proper fitness, training, etc can do in comparison. Obviously the best and funnist thing is to do both, but the later is the by far the key to going fast, and for longer durations, then the other will ever be. i have an income with zero depts, and i know all the eye candy passing thru this site can be addictive(now "i" should talk...eh?)as i am one of the worst with this curse called gear lust. just thought i'd try to thro some water on the obvious enthusiasum toward this which is great, but your very right at deciding to slow it down. just a friendly warning i guess, cause while i(like you right now)was laid up with those broken..um..collarbones and got the same fever since i think its natural for one to have a tendency to want be doing "something" toward riding, and since that cast won't pedal.... then, well..i(like you right now once again)proceded to spend myself into oblivion soon after, even tho 99.8% was great deals and snags, it still was alot. don't even like to think about it. the good part is i've been riding my ass off lately for 4 months now, which is a good thing. my best bud warned me when he saw that look in my face as i'm getting the fever for something. "you can spend a million dollars on mtn biking". yup. and even then its "never" finished. that new wonder whatever always comes out next week..next month, or whatever. This fact never changes with stuff like this.
now, back to my black bike. going night riding in abit. sure is nice not having to wakeup in the mornings LOL!! gotta be careful with this off stuff for sure.

| Thanks Duck and... | Trevor! Apr 14, 2003 7:21 PM | | I really appreciate what you say in all your post (Particularly the ones in passion). You know I came to the realisation today that being locked up all day has sent me a little mad. Thinking of what to buy next to build up a 2nd bike was a little out of the fact that I cannot ride at the moment and also that I am feeling a little down, as I have gone from doing 10hrs of athletcs training + 12hrs of MTB riding and lots of dog walking etc a week to nothing!!!!
Well never fear I am not going mad. My current NRS has been built up on the Cheap here in Australia! It's value would be close to $5000 but the truth is I have only spent the original cost of a Stock NRS plus a tiny bit over $1000 ($500us) for full XTR/M959s/Carbon Bars/Stans etc. Additional spending has been minimal and has been for repairs and replacements. I have a good nack at finding things on the cheap through ebay/closeouts/2nd hand and from friends odd parts laying about.
A possible 2nd bike will come through getting parts off ebay or in closeouts if possible. If I dont get a 2nd bike so be it. If I can make one on the cheap through ebay etc would be good. Dont have the finances to do so otherwise, plus being 19 and with your parents still sees them excercising a little control (LOL)
Looking foward to getting back into the swing of things and getting back in to my winter training program. Got some very serious races comming up from here till end of march next year (including 12hr/24hr 2x4day enduro events and around 4 timetrails and a cupple of std races)
Cheers
Thanks for the advice etc!
Just ordered a set of rockers to (Very good price for what you are getting)! |
| Its true, it is 90%rider, 10% bike, but at least.... | malcolm Apr 14, 2003 10:50 PM | | with a nice bike you are eliminating that 10%, so only 90% to go. LOL.
I've had 2x bikes in the past and it never really worked for me as I feel you attach to one bike more, and think about all the money you have in the other, and I prefer one bike that is still light but can also be a great trail bike.- put my money into a good road bike.
If you are doing lots of races then it may work as you will get lots of use from it.
I to ordered the rockers so we must compare.
Cheers,
Malcolm. |
| Yeah I agree 100% | Trevor! Apr 14, 2003 11:29 PM | | I was cleaning my bike today and I thought YEP two bikes would be great but really the one I have is fantastic as is. The difference between a race and my normal bike would be minimal so why bother. I really love my current bike!
I have been down the road bike line alot and I still cannot decide. I always think I will become too interested in Road Riding and not as much interested in MTB (Yeah Right!!!) so I always put it off. I tell you doing a hard 70K on a NRS is interesting to say the least - I could see the advantage of a Road in that situation.
Cant wait to get the rockers! Hopefully it wont take too long! Shall be cool! Will indeed compare notes on em! |
