OT: Road Pedals...DIRT BOY
Jul 10, 2003 10:31 AM
I am asking this because I value most opinions I get here.

I am looking at 2 road pedals:

Shimano Ultegra SPD-SL or LOOK PP247 or other LOOK pedals.
I have used both of the bards MTB pedals but leaning toward the LOOK for more float.

Any comments?

If you like float and lightweight...dirtdad

You gotta consider Speedplays. I love my X-1s. If you want less float and centering, try their zeros. As an MTB'er, having a two sided pedal on the road is great. I get into them all the time, first try, without looking. When I ride a big road event, I am always one of the first ones away from traffic lights because of my pedals. Never mind what happens a few hundred yards later.

Not only that, Nino runs 'em and has a lightening kit on his.
Have Campy Records, Look 396s and new Ultegras....SS_MB-7

I have Campy Records, Look 396s and more recently, the new Ultegras. I hated the Campys because I found them to be very unpredictable for entry/exit. So, I bought the Looks which helped tremendously. However, they creaked and creaked and creaked and developed a lot of premature play in the spindle. I bought a pair of the new Ultegras from EBay and they are a sweet pedal....typical Shimano: firm and positive entry with a definite "click" to know you are in; smooth float; solid and quiet, with a predictable exit. Also, I love the Shimano cleats since they are far easier to walk around in.

Speedplay pedals are the way to go.they won a pedal comparison test done by magazines over here.
lowest height for best pedaling circle.
most float
light weight
adjustable float (Zero-line)
short pedal body for lots of cornering speeds

the Ti X-1 weighs a scant 150g but the steel axled ones aren`t that much heavier but much cheaper.
I need some pedals that are cheaper than the Speedplay..DIRT BOY

Get the Speedplays! The steel ones aren't much more $$$....wfl3

...my stainless Speedplays are 198gms. Lots of knee saving float and probably the easiest road pedals to engage - one shot, no look clip ins almost every time. I also get less hotspots with the Speedplay cleats than I did with either the Look or SPD-R cleats.
Some of us get hotspots and unclip from speedplays, and DIRTBOY!Zonic Man

heard great things about and after having them for a month I know why. Weight is so-so for lower spec versions but they are really solid platform with nice float and easy exit. Only negative is clumsy entry sometimes.

With the Shimano Ultegra SPD-L because of cost (I carry these and they are cheap.)and recommendations from a few friends. I tried them and they felt nice. Good Shimano feel. I realized that might not need all that float with road riding. Shimano pedals have never bothered me when road riding.

Also I got some SIDI Titans from Jenson USA for $80!

Zonic,
I know guys that have got stuff from Totalcycling before. Their prices are GREAT! I will get my next pair of SIDI MTB shoes from them. I needed the pedals and shoes for this weekends Metric century that I a riding in.

If the Shimano bother me, I might make the jump to Speedplays and try them. I like the idea of dual entry. But I am on a budget with this bike :-(

Funny part is my road bike outweighs my Klein..LOL!
