cheap light stems from supergo and performance bike. Both have similiar stems for about 30 bucks weighing about 150grams or a bit more. (give benefit of doubt and checking weights on starbike )

This would be great if I thought the stems would not break too easily. Anyone using these with success? I know they are lame compared to the chi-chi FRM and Extralight stuff, but they are much closer to budget.

if you don't mind the cycling world's equivalent of "K-Mart" branded on it. Hey, I guess that's what spray paint is for...

I've never owned one myself. I have a Race Face Protoge, which I got at a swap meet for $12. Good stiff stem. I think you can get them new for like $25 these days.
