Anyone know or have personal experience with the Polar A5, compared to the Sigma Sport 1600 HRM? I'm looking for a HRM for under $100, and I'm currently not happy with my Timex HRM.

Thanks,

-Greg
The A5 is a great HRM. It's the #1 monitor I recommend..DIRT BOY

to all my clients and Spinning participants.
You can get the New Polar S150 that has the cycling functions for $100-119 on the net. The A5 sells around $90-110

The Sigmas are nice from what I hear from the few I have sold to people. BUT Polar is the BEST in HRM IMHO.

The advantage in the 1600 over the a5 is the recovery function. That's it. Other wise they do the same thing.

If you need a Sigma e-mail for a price. It's well within your budget.

And I think it was the best value thing I have bought in a while really. I don't put too much emphasis on HR training, I generally only really use it for my base training and for reference purposes furing build and peak/race times.

For me so far it has worked flawlessly for me. It functions in a logical manner, has all the features I need (Recovery, Reps, avg hr, HI/LO/IN, Cal function,Count down timer etc) and has worked great and works at the gym with the ergos and other equipment.

Looks sweet too!
That's what my coach says.Zonic Man

Apparently, polar is the only one NOT measuring beats, but doing the HR stuff through EKG analysis.

He recommends a simple Polar model on the wrist with NO functions and a cyclecomputer w/cadence for the bike.

(He did say the 420 was nice if you could afford one)
Yep he knows what he's talking about!Trevor!

I have been taught that sort of thing from my coach. I got to the stage during Athletics training that I could get out there with no HR monitor or stopwatches and could run sessions perfectly to goal times etc.
Why no functions? I use the 710i and a computer w/ cadence.DIRT BOY

I guess if cost is a factor, then I agree.
But if you want to download to your computer and see where your HR was at speed and rpm, they help.

I meant the "720" was nice....Zonic Man

But he doesn't recommend it.

He's a Dego like us, and pretty much one of the top coaches/cycling doctors in the world, too. It's pretty great having him right here in town.

Anyhow, he said that type of training becomes "static" after a while, and the athlete worries more about the physiology (downloading, etc.) than the bike ride or the concentration on the muscle groups.

On a side note, suzy and i re-scheduled our honeymoon to include a full 20 days of cycling in Tuscany. Woot woot!
I did not know your where a WOP/Gumba!DIRT BOY

Yes, I think I know what he means by that. I friend who is a top coach here said be careful about that same thing and don't ALWAYS rely on numbers.

Congrats on your Honeymoon. I am going to get married in October, then is off to Hawaii for 14 days of Scuba, Biking and Hiking!

We were going to go to Italy but with the Euro being high and Hawaii being a Once-in-a-lifetime trip. We are planning to go to Italy and Europe every year now.

My girlfriends 40th is down the road and we are going to do a bike trip in Tuscany to. Are you going with "Cross Roads" or on your own?

We are not sure which to do it with. I thought of doing it totally on my own. Please take some pics and I will give you a name of a sweet restaurant there where you can get a 50oz steak! (If you are not a veggie guy..LOL)The restaurant is so nice according to my Fiancé'

Vetta V100HR- economical, gr8 performancechilito

this is COMPLETELY unbiased (not saying anyone is):

i looked at alot of HR monitors- small and large brands from Supergo's inhouse stuff to Polar's top of the line stuff. i settled on the Vetta as an intermediate because of the fact that I dont need to download alllll the HR stats to my computer after a ride and I wanted to be able to have or add cadence to the computer. You can't go wrong with the Vetta especially for the low asking price.
