03 RS Sid Fork - Team or Race?(7 posts)

03 RS Sid Fork - Team or Race?Fast Freddy

Just looking at the specs the Race is lighter than the Team model - but are the Team upgrades worth the .2 lbs? Upgrades include (that I could figure out) Team's Pure Damping vs the Race's Pure Delight Damping, Team's Slippery Silver coating on the tubes vs. the Race's hard anodized, and then of course the obvious the Team fork has a lock out on it.... There's about $100 difference is it worth it to step up to the Team fork over the Race fork?

Thanks in Advance!

but you'll definitely want a lockout. That's one of the only forks I really used the lockouts on regularly, I really liked the lockout also.
You have the specs rightDuckman

The silver uppers make the fork better as far as stiction. But hell, that might make the fork better since we are talking about a sid. The Race doesn't have the lockout, which to me is important. Um...just installed my Team sid, factory rockers, carbon bar(over my ti bar), and some more do-dads. Figure i'm a glut'n for punishment, and may race the sid next week at Dauset in our GAP series. Smooth trails. also needed to remind myself why i hate that sid. Weight should be a true 22.3-4lbs as of right now(will weigh it later today at a Trek lbs...cause they love me and my Giant:). Re-weighed my Team fork compared to my Marathon tonight. A tic over 4oz difference. Not nearly enough considering the performance gap.

Duck-just playing is all. Wheres my USE seatpost shim any-how..dammit? Extralite post clamp and alloy 11th lockring:). And yes, i'm hopeless.
Hated them both....TheOld Man

I tried each one for several weeks on my Smoothie. The Team never yielded more than 68-70mm travel regardless of the tweaking. We've had the same problem in our shop with other Teams and World Cups even after rebuilds and/or returns to RockShox. The Race actually got about 72mm travel but I never got it to be supple in the first 25-30mm of travel - it beat me up on big gravel and stutter bumps. I gave up and got a Fox 80RLT which has proven to be the best fork I've ever ridden. In fact, I like it so much that I could care less about the weight differential.
SID or Bust?Cloxxki

I sell bikes as a distributor, and the demand for SID has been close to zero since I also offer a €250 cheaper Manitou Scareb Super. Haven't heard a bad thing about it, nad in real life, it can't be much heavier than a SID.

In the same price range, Fox is very strong (way stiffer), and White Brothers is a great outsider. Affordable yet ultra stiff, all the adjustments, and very 100% USA made, not Taiwan such as the competition. EA70 tubing, CNC'd alu all over the place. Very nice.

Why a SID, just the claimed weight? Will you run discs?

I've got a '03 SID World Cup and absolutely love it!

Actual weight is 1305g (cut to 195mm, no brake bosses and no remote lock-out -- I'm using the non-remote lock-out dial). Once I got the fork dialed-in, it has been incredible! When I originally set the fork-up as per RockShox's manual, I hated the fork. I emailed RS and quickly had a reply to try a new setting:
1 - for +ve pressure: body weight - 20psi
2 - for -ve pressure: body weight - 50psi
3 - rebound 3 turns-out from full fast.

I do find that the "Slippery Silver" stanchion coating helps to reduce stiction. The SID World Cup is very, very plush. Also, during double track, fire-roads, climbs, etc., I quickly flip the lock-out on and then flip the lock-out off for singletrack, downhills, etc.

FWIW, I race Expert XC, weigh 135lbs, and use B4 SL discs. I have not had a single issue with using discs on my SID...granted, I am fairly light. However, a 185lbs teammate of mine is using a SID Team with Magura Louise and also has no issues with SID, discs and flex.

Ride Hard,
Mike B.
i love mine too! its a xc racing weapon nothing more. nmstump
