| Eclipse and the Curse of Conti..... | spangelsaregreat Oct 20, 2003 12:18 PM | | No, it is not the title of a Sherlock Holmes novel....
....so I was riding along a bit of local single track. I approached a small rooty section and as I hit the first root the front tyre started hissing and latex began shooting out.
I waited for the hissing to stop, hoping to adopt a smug stance at the greatness of my latex sealant doing its thing. It didn't.
I got off and found an inch and a half tear cutting across the tread of the tyre, to large for the sealant to plug the hole.
It resulted in a 3 mile walk to a phone box (I forgot to bring my multi tool so I was unable to get the valve off the rim due to latex gumming it onto the thread - no biggie, my fault, a replacement tube would have prevented the long walk in the rain).
When I got home and examined the tyre (Conti Explorer Duraskin). The tear was similar to those described in previous posts about Conti tyres. There was separation of the rubber from the casing etc etc.
I have bought a couple of Michelin WildGripper Comp S (two for the price of one) as replacements. Hope they will be a bit more successful.
Moral of the story.....don't use Conti tyres with Latex....and remember to bring your tools!!!
One good thing, my 4.5 inch replacement rocker arms on my NRS seem really good. I only got a short ride before my tyre gave way but the ride was so much better. Plusher while still retaining the no bob thing. More on this once I get a chance to ride it properly. |
| that's with newer, THAILAND MADE Contis..... | nino Oct 20, 2003 1:04 PM | | as described in other posts it's really the newer Contis which are made in Thailand...seems quality suffered big time!! |
| How can one tell if a specific Conti tire was made in Thailand? | DavidG Oct 20, 2003 5:41 PM | | Do you need the box the tire came in, or can you tell just by looking at the tire?
Thanks!

| It says "made in Thailand"....... | farmer rick Oct 20, 2003 5:49 PM | | on the sidewall.
A number of Cannondale models have had these fitted OEM, at least for the Australian market.
Infact, the Thai made ones are the only one's I've seen available aftermarket in Australia for at least the last two years. |
| Whew... My Twister SSs say "Made in Germany"... [nm] | DavidG Oct 21, 2003 12:15 AM | | |
