| v brake problem | bmadau Jan 19, 2004 11:49 AM | | I've had this annoyance with my brakes for a while now, that when I squeeze down the the lever my rear brake lever would make a click and the lever would move a little further, like a catch in the brake pull. That makes for a crappy lever feel, let me tell you. So, I was doing some maintinence on my bike over the weeked and I discovered what's causing it. On my Avid SD7 levers, the little place for the lug on the end of the cable is very large, and that lug has a lot of room to move around in the lever thingy. So, when the brakes aren't applied, the lug twists, or unseats, and as the lever is pulled it twists back straight as it should, but sometimes, it'll catch, and then snap straight. Anyone have any suggestions how to fix that (other than change to different levers or switch to disk, etc.)?
Ps. I was inspired to get more performance out of my brakes after reading all of the posts about the potential of V brakes. So, I took my cables off, cleaned them real good and lubed them with some gun oil (it's what I have on hand). I adjusted my pads and replaced my rear pads because I suspect I contamintated them while lubing my chain and not cleaning of the rim good enough. I aslo steel wooled the sides of my rims back to shiny alum, and let me say, man what a difference. The lever pull is lighter than hydraulic brakes that I've felt, and the engagement with the rim is nice a firm with far improved stopping power. I just need to get rid of that click and they'll be golden. |
