Barbie Camp Rocks(28 posts)

Barbie Camp RocksGeneral Coonskins

What a party, good BEER, good riding, good friends, good beer (did I already say that) and big fire(s). I am sure everyone that went will post their own rendition of Barbie Camp but I wanted to give you my take.

We showed up Friday night around 9ish to a most friendly welcome, "give us the brands and go home", the only problem was that the fire wasn't really going yet. Sure they had a fire but everyone was huddled around enjoying the warmth of the embers. The first order of business was to put as much wood on as I could. Not long and everyone was moved back about 5 feet and the fire was rippen. I had done my job and it was time to set up camp. By the time I got back the brands had been well used and the group felt good. Settling in everyone made the introductions once again and went on with what ever conversation they had going before I joined the ring. Let's see if I can remember everyone that was there, forgive me if I forget someone; Sparticas, Shiggy, SSJimbo, JRA, SpookySS, Noah, Angie, Kim, Sharon, Kevin@webcyclery.com, Scott T (with a 24' motor home), Wayne, Chris & Katy, Albee, The Big Bastard & Wolfe, Lee (with a VW block), Ken, Paul & I know there were others but just can't recall them since I had started in on the beer. The first night seemed pretty mellow with everyone just getting to know each other. I headed off to bed around midnight anxious for the promise of a good ride the next day.

Saturday dawned with warmer than expected temperatures and forecast for a nice day. The smell of breakfast filled the air as everyone was cooking up their magic potions to fuel them on the days rides. We broke into several groups forming a total of 4 different rides. Sparitcles, Shiggy, JRA, Justin, Myself and Brandon headed off to do a shorter ride, Kevin you are such a good sport. 2 miles into the ride we broke off from the main group and headed down the Suttle Tie trail, a fun twisty singletrack that goes downhill for about 3 1/2 miles along the road. About half way down we came to a road crossing, when Sparticus showed up I put the thought out we could beat the other group to the top of Cache Mountain if we wanted. It was a almost unanimous decision as we convinced JRA that it was a easy ride to the top, Kevin you are such a good sport. We did beat the others to the top and had also hooked up with another group of 5 of which 1 would join the party later. So we had 11 riders in our group and 6 were on single speed's. We hit the top and it didn't take long for the first part of the second group to show up, our group getting cold we decided to head down off the mountain. The first part of the trail was blast, at least I thought so, most everyone else couldn't get past the rain rut in the middle of the trail. After about 1/2 mile the trail smoothed out to some fun fast singletrack, we hit the road at the bottom that would take our group back to the point we had made the short 17 mile detour. Finishing up with a scenic tour through the old Barbie camp we made our way back to camp for a fun filled evening of trying to bride the judges for the next day's unofficial Singlespeed Championship. It was a night of bad jokes, beer drinking, fire building, VW block burning & all around fun. We burned about 2 cords of wood in about 6 hours, enough that on Sunday it took 50-60 gallons of water to cool off the ground.

Sunday morning came around with the promise of another great day of riding. While Shiggy dis-organized the SS's Sparticas and I headed off to plant the beer. We returned to the camp in time to take pictures and get ready before heading out on the un-official race course. I will let shiggy give the details of the race since he was the disorganized one of the group. All I can say is that I was the first back and my prize was to brand the un-official champion. It was a fun course consisting of some fast twisty singletrack with numerous creek crossings to keep your feet from warming up to the outside temperature of 38 degrees. Allot of Beer drinking and plenty of pictures, SSJimbo get's the award for the best way to carry his empties back to camp.

With the race over and everyone happy it was time for the judge to hand out the prizes. Webcyclery donated some cool swag as they were the non-sponsor of the event. Let's just say that it did not matter how fast you were or how nice you were to the judges it was random awards to everyone. I ended up with some cool stickers "one f#$%ing speed" and plenty off beer to take home, of course by the time I left it was half gone. By the way did you make home with the brew SSJimbo or did you have to down it at the check in counter.

Looking forward to spring BC, feel the burn,
The General

Name these two riders on the Metolius Windigo Trail at Barbie Camp and win a free invitation to next year's campout...

(Hint: The one riding while drinking the beer is from Florida and the brightly colored one with the horns lives in Veneta, Oregon.)

The beer drinking Floridian is Jimbo smartypants and his Ute-yful chestermobile. The one behind him looks like captain freakazoid.

But the Cap'n Freakazoid I'm thinking of goes by another name here on mtbr...

Of course you're invited to BC anyway, BigRing, but really -- if not by the Plaid Sabbath costume, can't you tell who rider #2 is by the home-modified goofy white drop-bar dual-Avid-disc VooDoo bike?

C'mon, take another stab -- anybody?

I was feeling all sorry for myself for not being able to go to Barbie Camp, but after seeing these pictures and reading the stories I'm TERRIFIED to attend next year's bash! I didn't realize that I had entered such a seedy den of cyclists by buying a single speed. Why it's as bad as the things I have witnessed here in Fruita with Chet Peach.

Truthfully, it looks like a grand ol' time. I would be afraid of the brands, though.

i must say that this was one of the most interesting weekends i have yet too experience.
it contrived of incredible rides around Cache Mountain, plenty of beer for the over 21 crowd, three very hot branding irons, and jokes that would bust the political sensorship scale.
All in all, the rides were great, even the creek crossings sunday that ensued about half an hour by the fire to regain feeling from, and i walked out with a webcyclery jersey. score.
thanks to the dod for disorganizing the nonrace event and i look forward to the next bc.

Guardian of the woodpile, Barbie looks over the campsite. We burned about three cords of wood during the BC weekend, Friday evening through Sunday morning.

Too bad Chris took that hatchet to the back of his head... THAT'S gotta hurt!
