Rigid fork for big guy...........(10 posts)

Rigid fork for big guy...........Mr. Tokyo

Ok. I know the post below about the rigid fork warning stirred some concern in my mind. Will this fork (pic attached) do the job for SS xc riding for a 230lb guy??

...Ask SS_MB-7, he ran that fork for awhile.

I am 225lbs and quite happy with the performance of my Hunter rigid fork. Its one of the more pricey options out there though.

Webcyclery has a nice selection of super beefy forks like the On-one, Surly and Planet-X. All good choices for someone hard on forks.

Don't be too worried about rigid forks snapping. Ritchey forks are really lightweight. Just look at all the dirt jumpers, BMXer's, and trials riders out there on rigid forks.

I just checked and that fork weighs 2.4lbs. Oval blades. 430mm length. I think it will do fine. I'm getting painted the same color as the frame I am ordering.
Thanks Matt.
Yep, I rode the Spicer and it's....SS_MB-7

Yep, I rode the Spicer for about 1 month and it was a great fork! Granted, I'm only 130lbs, I noticed absolutely zero flex in this fork -- true precision steering. Uncut, the Spicer was 2.6lbs. After being immediately hooked on rigid riding, I opted for something a lot lighter with a little more "give" to it -- I opted for a Morati Ti (1.4lbs).

My fork is for sale if you are interested. It's about 1 month old (12 rides) and in great condition. The steerer is 195mm. Email me if you are interested at mb7@singlespeed.net.

I'm getting a new one painted the same as the frame Spicer is building me. Thanks for the offer though. I think it should be fine for what riding I do here, and I will only be running a 160mm disk in front as well.

I'm running that fork right now (disclaimer: I'm a lot lighter than 230#). It's big and beefy. Basically the Surly fork with a disc mount. IMO you should be fine with it.

If that fork is the Spicer, then I haven't been using it. I've been running the Dimension disc, which has more tire clearance than the Spicer.

It's not a light fork, but you're not a light guy.

At 230lbs, running disc brakes and big tyres, you're going to be putting a lot of load through the forks.

We have NEVER had a return on a Planet X fork, without a doubt, indicating that they are overbuilt for the majority of people.

But fork failures are nasty things.

I know what I'd choose.

for about 6 months with no complaints. i think my frame would break at the headtube before the fork. i'm in the 220 range running discs and would highly recomend this fork. my only complaint (my fault) is that i got the shorter version (not susp. corrected) and have trouble mount a fender and still having mud clearance. without out the fender its fine though.
