Optimum tire for Sea Otter Classic?(8 posts)

Optimum tire for Sea Otter Classic?SandiaSS
Feb 12, 2002 6:32 AM
I'm racing the Sea Otter Expert SS this year, and was wondering what the best tire to run was. I like the low rolling resistance of a semi slick, but will they hook up? I prefer Michelin, Conti, and Hutchinson tires because I use the liquid latex tubeless setup and they seem to seat up and seal the best. Input would be appriciated.
Thanx, Michael

SeaOtter is a semi-sandy, hardpack trail. Even if it rains it will be hardpack and fast. So, no mud tires necessary. Use something that rolls very fast. You won't need hardly any bite at all. Last year I ran Ritchey tires, which have no bite to speak of, and I was fine. I would recommend the Panaracer XC Firepro 2.1 since it is super light, rolls very fast, and has a little bit of bit for the sand. Any tire that won't slow you don't should be fine. The course is fast and long. We will be flying on open fire road, rolling hills, and long steady climbs.
I used Python Air Lights last year...shiggy©®™

...and they never made a false move. I will use them again this year (maybe a Fast Fred on the rear) unless it is wet. If it is I will run a more open tread.

For what it's worth, I ran a panaracer up front and a Tioga Factory Slick on the rear, crappy tire overalll but fast for hardpack. I know alot of guys ran the Hutchison Pythons for that course and were happy with them.

Tioga DH tires....Andy aka Rut

Since I'll be racing against you the Tioga DH should work just fine for you. I also suggest a really heavy Camelpak. You will need to fill it completely with Jack and Coke and plenty of spare parts. Maybe an extra crankset and a spare set or wheels. Don't forget food. May I suggest a Honey Baked Ham? All that should have not problems fitting in a Camelpak.
I'll be running the 2.24 MutanoRaptors on the front. They roll very well.
