| Hey Brant - 'cross brake/lever opinions.... | SS_MB-7 Feb 12, 2002 10:29 AM | | I'm trying to decide what brakes to spec on my SS 'cross/fixed gear bike. Here are my options: 1 - Shimano road levers with Avid Shorty cantis; 2 - Dia-Compe 287V v-brake road levers with XTR v-brakes; 3 - Magura HS66 road hydraulic rim brakes; 4 - Shimano road levers with Avid cable actuated road disc brakes; or 5 - Dia-Compe 287V v-brake road levers with Avid cable actuated MTB disc brakes. Right now, I'm leaning towards #2. Since you are using this set-up on your newly built Il Pompino, I'd like your opinion on this combo. Have you tried any of the others listed? Any other options I should consider? Ride Hard, Mike B. |
| My opinion :-) | Brant Feb 12, 2002 11:41 AM | | My 287Vs with XTR are working really really well. Very impressed.
I have used Shimano levers with some form of canti, and wasn't startled. I think monkeying around with cable hangers I could have got a better feel, but it wasn't my bike.
I've never used the Magura road levers (never even seen a pair actually!)
Avid disc brakes I think would be overkill, and to be honest I don't think you need the power they deliver. |
| Thanks! I'm going with the 287V and V-brakes (nm) | SS_MB-7 Feb 12, 2002 11:45 AM | | |
| I'm not Brant. and I'm not from that | martini Feb 12, 2002 12:53 PM | | side of the pond, but I DO have an opinion.
I've always though that v-brakes were overkill on a 'cross bike. There's hardly any tire/tread contacting the ground for the power you get out of vbrakes! In my experience canti's set up properly with standard shimano road levers worked fantastic. Granted, it did take a bit to set up the brakes right, but once you get them there, cantis will stop with almost as much passion as v's do. It's hard for those little tires to keep up with the grip offered by v's.
ml~no this is not scientific. it's all about emotion! |
| Yes I know what you mean | Brant Feb 12, 2002 12:59 PM | | Its just I had these xtr v's lying around and it was cheaper to get some 287V levers than to start from scratch. |
| want my opinion???? | mtnbykr© Feb 12, 2002 3:57 PM | | I've ran regular shimano road levers w/ vbrakes and travel agents and that setup sucked bad.(pads too close to rim, weird lever feel, on/off modulation.)
Then I tried campy road levers w/ the new avid canti. This is/was a killer setup. You can modulate the brakes, they have great stopping power and the pads aren't rubbing the rims.
On my Il pompino I've got 287v levers w/ xt v brakes and although I haven't ridden it yet, I have these opinions.....
The lever to bar distance will be perfect for off road use. My hand falls right where it need to be. The brakes still feel like they'll have on/off modulation but w/o a test ride, who knows.
The v's still have too much power for those skinny tires.
Remember, this is my opinions....
I'll post more after I've rode it a bit.

| No!!.....Just kidding ;) So, how's the Il Pompino... | SS_MB-7 Feb 12, 2002 4:11 PM | | Thanks for your opinion. So, how's the Il Pompino? Did you get the sizing issue worked out? Ride Hard, Mike B. |
| Sizing issue is sorted. Planet X road frame for $150!!! | Brant Feb 13, 2002 12:45 AM | | The 54cm we sent fits fine apparently. However, it's taken this long for him to get him Pompino as our warehouse guy sent the WRONG frame to him! Like really wrong! Like a Planet X Kaffenback.
The Kaffenback is a geared winter road frame. Same geometry as the Pompino, but with vertical drops, cable stops etc.
If we can find someone that wants it, they can have it for $150, becuase it's easier than getting it back to us.
Here's a pic. The frame is a 54cm one and comes with a fork |
| Is it still available? | Drevil Feb 13, 2002 5:34 AM | | I'm definitely interested, but where can I find sizing details? Is it unused? The Planet X site does not have a working page for the bike. I'm 5'9", will it work for me? |
| YES! | Brant Feb 13, 2002 5:44 AM | | Sell sell sell!!
I'm a bit worried that you say you can't get the page to work on the website, as that's my job too :-(
But yes... I've just checked, and there is a problem. You're right.
Have a look at:-

| No thanks... | Drevil Feb 13, 2002 7:33 AM | | ... it looks to be too big. Interesting bike and great price, but I'm not going to be able to ride it. |
| SOLD!!! (nm) | Brant Feb 13, 2002 9:59 AM | | |
| Nice... | mtnbykr© Feb 14, 2002 4:34 AM | | quality welds, nice tubing, light, good paint.
