Celebrating the Year of the Horse (Crosspost, barely ss) (1 post)
| Celebrating the Year of the Horse (Crosspost, barely ss) | screampint Feb 12, 2002 12:37 PM | | I started early, as Tuesdays aren't always a good day for celebration. We decided that Sunday was when we would invite the friends over to make merry. My Sunday was hugely busy. It began with waffles in the morning. It's a Sunday tradition at the pint household. We have a Mickey Mouse waffle iron and if the waffles aren't served up on Sunday I hear whining all day from the family (you don't love us, you made us eat Cheerio's!). The mochas from the espresso machine flow and I (wo)man the waffle iron. This Sunday it was a little different, as I had to bake a batch of chocolate chip cookies as well. I needed them for the cheesecake I was making (hardly Chinese, but much better than those bean filled sweet buns... Blech!). After the waffles were all but consumed, the cookies baked, and the cheesecake made and cooling on the counter it was time for some fun! The baby sitter came soon after the youngest was bathed, so Jordan and I were ready to go. We waited for Myn and Alisa to show, but after a call we were to meet Alisa at the trailhead. We piled into Myn's requisite Outback (it's required driving in Colorado) and raced to the Kokopelli.
Alisa was waiting for us when we arrived, so we hurriedly unpacked the car to get the wheels, helmets, camelbaks, and bodies out. We were soon ready to go and started up over the ridge. The plan was to just do Rustler's, I had Jordan with me, Alisa had been pent up in a house too long to stay in shape after twins (but she's out now!), and Myn was experiencing the "sitter clock."
At the start of Rustler's we ran into Kev and Brian, who were doing some work on the sign. After chatting a bit, we continued on our way, only to run into Archie. It was a very social ride. I don't know that anyone has done Rustler's Loop slower than we did Sunday. Not because we were riding slowly, but rather because we were stopping to chat so much. It's a good thing we didn't attempt anything longer.
I did however, have the pleasure of passing a man on a Seven full suspension bicycle. I'm a little modest about passing folks on my single speed, as it's more of the nature of the bikes, rather than the fitness or skill of the riders. I have no choice but to stand up and pedal aggressively going up hills. The guy on the Seven looked at me sideways, as though I was trying to race him. And while I admit, there is pleasure in passing someone on a hill, I like to do it quietly, rather than huffing and puffing while I crank the chainring as best I can.
Anyway, it was too soon that we arrived at the car, yet cutting it close for time. I still had to prepare egg rolls, scallion pancakes (Jordan's favorite), and the Salmon with oyster sauce and sesame seeds. At least I was able to get out.
Sunday evening we all feasted and enjoyed the Olympics. After riding and preparing food for 15 people (5 of them kids), I was ready for bed! What a way to celebrate the year of my family's name! |
