| Y0-!-CALIF. SSers-SWEET RACE ALERT-FIRESTONE XC | Uglydog Feb 12, 2002 4:32 PM | | Hey to those guys I rode with in Santa Cruz this is the race I was talking about:
Besides Sea Otter and Single Speed Worlds a lot of races aren't happening this year. There is a race in Los Olivos (North of Santa Barbara) on the 5th of May, that brings back the feel of racing like it was back in the late 80's and early 90's. Fun course, great BBQ, beer, sweet raffle and live music.
This is going to be the third year for this race, known as the Firestone Walker Brewing Co. XC race. It's held on the grounds of the vineyard and the surronding hills. I've done it both years and had a blast. Last year I convinced the promoter to give single speeds their own class, only three of us showed up. Started after the last age class of Sports, and preceded to terrorize them over the course. This year single speeds will race during the expert event.
The event costs $37 (pre-reg) which gets you: race entry (duh), t-shirt, bbq lunch (both years that was tri-tip, chicken, and some vegetarian offering), live music, 1 beer or soda (Firestone Brewery has a refrigerated trailer selling pints for extra thirsty racers) and a raffle ticket. One of the biggest raffles I've ever seen. The first year I won a pair of time pedals, a Timbuk2 bag, and lots of small swhag, last year won a pair of deore disk hubs, mugs, pint glasses, etc. Highly reccomend buying an extra ticket or two. The awards are totally custom as well.
Just so everyone knows, I don't work for group putting on this race. But this event got me jazzed to start racing again.
It would be a blast to get single speeders from Northern and Southern California together to form a huge class and have some good racing.
Thanks for listening-Joshua Bennett

Hey Josh, are you riding this weekend? I have to be in berkeley Sunday eve, trying to plan a ride sometime before that, maybe Monday...
Of course Santa Cruz is a good call, maybe China Camp with Tamjam. |
| How about Sunday-Joquien Miller-Redwood | Uglydog Feb 12, 2002 6:27 PM | | DAS-
Gotta work late on Monday, but Sunday is wide open. We could do a pretty fun (technical single track and fire road ride) in the East Bay just South of Berkeley.

| great race | konagrl Feb 13, 2002 10:14 PM | | I raced this last yr., and it was a terrific race! Lots of fun. I think this yr. they are planning on more singletrack . There was a GREAT raffle at the end, too. Almost everyone left with something. The course was actually pretty tough, and there was no shade. I think that's why theyre running it in May this yr., instead of July. |
