Any old wrecked cars on your trails?(13 posts)

Any old wrecked cars on your trails?DAS

That pic that Mugg posted made me think of this. There is an old truck that is half dug into the mud on my home-town trail on Alpine Road. TimL was telling there was one in Belmont, TamJam and I saw one at China camp...Does EVERYONE have a broken down, 50 year old car on their favorite trail? How do they get there? I guess they flip off the road and settle near some single track, never to be recovered.

Seems like I'm always hearing someone say, "turn right at the old broken down buick, drop into the aspen grove, etc..."

Chicks.
The one at China Camp has a cool story...matt in marin

I've heard that the car is from the Air Force guys stationed at the Nike missile site on the top of the ridge during the fifties or sixties. At the bottom of the hill was Dominican College back when it was a school for nuns (a convent right?). The boys had a bit much too drink one night and decided to head down the hill to find some of the younger "students". They didn't get far before they lost it over the side. Its kinda funny how the crashed in one of the straighter sections. Oh well...

Don't know if it's 100% true but that's the story I got from my boss at M.C. Open Space.

There is also that car on Tam beside the Matt Davis trail. That one is a lot farther from the road though. Don't think anyone walked away from that.

I don't know if it is still there, but I remember seeing the front half of an old truck in Wilder Ranch, off of one of the single tracks, back in 94'. Looked like it had been there since the 50's.

there's an old vw beetle at a private trail in San Antonio, a old Ford truck from the 40s-50s at San Antonio Ranch and various lawnmowers at Mainland (not a car but cooler than your average rusted hunk of appliance or nasty old couch)

seems like old cars go off by themselves to die

....somebody's old meadow runner because it's sitting against a tree near the top of a ridge and the only thing above the ridge is cow pasture. Figure they were toolin' around and lost it over the side and couldn't get out. Anyway, it's an old, completely rusted car from the '40's. Not sure what. This one is in Rock Bridge State Park in Columbia, MO. I think about it's story every time I ride by.

Peace,

... in St Louis, we don't see many cars, but one of our trails runs along the merimac river, so after the flood season it is not uncommon to find all sorts of treasures on the trail. For some reason, washing machines seem to be most prevelant.

Seems like people just have to make their mark. There is one in Gambrill Park. Go down the green trail from the gravel lot and then just keep going straight at the blue trail. There's a fire road and I kind of opens up and there's a whole bunch of trash and an old trashed car there. I've only seen that one once. Then there is the VW beetle on the blue trail in the watershed. I haven't seen Mugg's post, but this is probably the picture he posted. The thing is in the middle of nowhere. I don't know how the hell they got it there. It looks like they dropped it out of an airplane or something. Then there is an old white 50's car on the blue trail north of Hamburg road. That one looks like someone just drove or towed it up there and left it to die.

There's one below mossy rock in Auburn that someone drove off a cliff a looooong time ago. And then there's a burned out car at the top of Flagstaff above Salmon Falls, it acts as the land mark to show people the opening to Mickey Mouse (insane fun by the way).
a few here...qtip

the cars that came to mind are on a section of trail off the shoreline trail known as the bobsled. fun ride with great berms. a couple of old rusted out beaters partially buried in the soil. one of them has a few rocks stacked in front to allow easy access to the top of the car but the drop off the back is a little more sketchy with the broken out rear window and rusty steel.
one worth seeing....alibi

A trail near Park City has a small side loop named "Rambler". I swooped by one day and found a 50% intact 1967 Rambler Marlin in blue/white; very rare to see this car in any condition. No idea how it could have gotten anywhere near it's final resting place.

Well we actually have a trail called car wrech here in aliso woods in so cal. the trail is nasty steep for 50 feet and at the point where you get to the bottom and are just about to control your speed there is a turn. as you round the turn you come upon the trunk of a late 50s early 60s buick looking thing. it is buries 50% in the ground and the 1st time I rode the trail I ended up in the trunk after launching over the handle bars. now note this is a totally Illegal trail now so we cant enjoy it anymore (lots of ranger patrols there) I could not immagine how this car got to its final resting point there.

Yeah, on the backside of our Telegraph trail system, at the bottom of "Suicide" is a spermhead loop we call the "Old Car Loop" because it goes past a rusting '49 Ford (I think). My friends like to stop there for a snack, but I prefer the views up on the ridge before dropping down to the car.

in the Columbia/Sonora area I can recall at least 4. Most of these rusty rigs were concentrated in the Italian Bar area.
