long time, no read, or bike
long story (involving taking three of the hardest classes at the school)

anyway. for one of my classes now i am machining my own brake arms. any tricks or tips, any small details that i might otherwise overlook.
i'm also toying with the idea of designing my own spring system instead of just ripping existing ones out of my avid 10's.

thanks

I used to make my own linear brake springs back in the days before V-brakes. They're far superior to the old coil springs in most cantilevers of the day. I never made brake arms, though.

If I was going to machine my own arms, I'd consider making them just a little bit longer than the typical V brake arms on the market today. Just a few millimeters of extra length will provide a lot more leverage/power. Be careful not to go too long though, your levers only pull so much cable. Obviously tolerance around the pivot/boss hole area is important, and my guess is you'll need to use some kind of stainless steel insert there due to rapid wear caused by extreme loads.

Show 'em to us at Spring Barbie Camp (April 5,6,7)? See you there!

Let me know how that goes, i've been looking at doing the same thing. Right now I"m working on a tensioner. I'll put pics up once it's finished.
