| any strong feelings about one freewheel over another? | trimojo Feb 13, 2002 11:37 AM | | ss are simple, so we all usually just get along...
but, i need to get a couple new freewheels for gearing options (heading for the HILLS) and one LBS shop guy says the ACS Claws freewheels must be better 'cause they cost more than Shimano, but he's not sure?! another LBS guy says there's no difference, BMX riders ride what their sponsors give 'em or what's cheapest
i'm thinking that (like Chris King freehub bodies vs. generic) there could be a difference due to design and/or manufacturing tolerances... these differences would show up in reliability and engagement delay, or lack thereof
i have a Shimano 16T as part of my 32:16 setup now and it's ok, but not special... is that all there is? |

Other than that I'm not sure if there are any real differences. Actually, one difference that I found important was that if you are looking for a 20 tooth freewheel ACS is the only manufacturer (I could find) that makes one that big. |
| I have had better luck with... | shiggy©® Feb 13, 2002 5:49 PM | | ...ACS than Shimano and if I do not have to use Shimano I prefer not to.
With the ACS I do have a knocking sound while pedaling sometimes. Most of the time it will stop knocking if I backpedal or coast for a moment.
My real preference is a new freewheel over an old one. |
| You might also want to check out the new SunRace freewheel | dlk Feb 13, 2002 11:10 PM | | Not exactly sure if it's been released yet, but I've been using one for a couple of months now - no problems. It starts out real stiff but loosens over time. It's silent - doesn't make the tick-tick noise of the ACS, or to a lesser extent, the Shimano. |

I don't see it in the QBP catalog but if Sunrace is at their open house this wkend, I'll grab some info and post it.

The entire unit is nickel plated, so it won't rust as quickly. However, if it's rusting on the outside, it's probably looking like shit on the inside. |
| I'll stick to my dictas... | ohio Feb 14, 2002 12:46 PM | | ... at 6 bucks a pop, who the hell cares if they're plated/anodized/hardened/polished/oversized or made from ground up baby seals? They work. |
