| Ouch! $2000 | Ginz Feb 17, 2002 4:30 PM | | Super-sweet. Has anyone seen one? I don't think I could shell out 2 large. Are there any similar, curved-top tube frames out there(singlespeed, or not)? Either cheap or expensive? A Supergo $80 special, perhaps? |
| perfect answer | Henry Dorset Case Feb 17, 2002 6:41 PM | | diamondback voyager frame.
its a cruiser style frame that was sold (I think) as a city or comfort bike a few years back. Its a 7005 alloy frame that will take a triple chainring (if you are into that) and seems fairly strong.
Mine is set up as a road commuter SS and is really good to ride.
the frame secondhand was $175NZD which is almost at your $80USD supergo level.
Its quite long in the chainstays, but I dont know if that is an issue for you.
go haunt those garage sales or out of the way bike shops!
Mine now has the NCC74656 stickers on the downtube because I am the prince of geekdom.... |

| perfect answer | ssbob Feb 19, 2002 5:49 AM | | i have a complete voyager 2. how do i make the rear wheel ss. it cheap alivo hub i have no cash . thanks |
| go see your LBS | Henry Dorset Case Feb 19, 2002 4:09 PM | | and ask them nicely for a couple of stuffed cassettes, then take them home and punch or drill out the rivets that hold it together, then discard the cogs and you will be left with enough spacers to space the cog across.
If your alivio hub is the standard shimano pattern you will be able to slot a Shimano BMX DX cog on there (they are about the cost of a couple of beers) They are good because they have big tall teeth that keep your chain on, and no ramps. At its simplest its a case of removing your existing cassette (which should get you some spacers) lining up the cog, putting the lockring on, whipping off the chainrings you dont need and boom, instant singlespeed.
have a look at the sheldon brown site: www.sheldonbrown.com |
| Surprisingly, quite a few.. | fû Feb 17, 2002 6:47 PM | | ..although some aren't very off-road inclined, having provisions for only a coaster brake, having comfort bike geometry, and the like. I posted the same question a while back in Passion and recieved some good info: thread. Never got around to finding one for myself though.
I think the Merlin Newsboy is even more expensive than the Titus.
Retrotec has been resurrected by one of its welders, Curtis Ingles, who is again making cruiser style frames in steel. It was recently mentioned here that he could be contacted through Sycip: thread
Also a few budget offerings, as was discussed in the Passion thread, but you may have to poke around to find one. One of the bike mags had a pic from last year's Interbike of a KHS built up by Troy Lee Designs (I think) in retro fashion, so that must still be available. Someone recently posted their Diamondback Voyager built up as a ss, looked nice: thread
Good luck! |
| speaking of cruisers, and Sycip... | Pablo Feb 17, 2002 7:21 PM | | thier Java Boy is one sweet-looking cruisermobile. Talk about a stylie steed to cruise to the coffe shop, grab a Times, and check out the scene! |
| Another answer, not sure if it's a perfect answer ... | dlk Feb 17, 2002 7:33 PM | | ... but at $19.99, the price sure is right:

| Sweet..that is the bike I wanted but could not get. | Henry Dorset Case Feb 19, 2002 4:13 PM | | I tried to get one from the Australian importer but it was about a month before schwinn went tits up....so the voyager came along. Im pretty happy with it though |
| Can you afford $20? | DeeEight Feb 17, 2002 8:44 PM | | http://www.ediscountbike.com/edbikestore/showdetl.cfm?&DID=1&User_ID=217577&st=1983&st2=131592561&st3=674770657&Product_ID=191&CATID=1 They're 130mm dropout spacing though, but that can be good if you want to use a BMX rear hub, less re-spacing involved. |
| Along the same lines as the other mentioned.. | Carl Mega Feb 17, 2002 9:24 PM | | http://www.theped.com/globeFrames.htm
Avail in big sizes for $49. |

| trek with horiz dropouts | Rossman Feb 18, 2002 7:30 AM | | the trek clyde is a 4 speed black cruiser that looks like the schwinn panther. you could easily take off the rear wheel and shifters and put on a ss wheel.
and it's only 400 bucks or so. |
