| what to do? car/bike accident story and new frame questions | BudhaSlug Apr 17, 2002 11:06 AM | | I was hit by (read ran into at 25mph when they pulled out in front of me) a car recently and my surly cross check fixee/ss is now quite well destroyed... as in the front wheel is nested about 3 inches BEHIND the downtube. Fortunately it was the cars fault entirely and their insurance will be paying for the replacement. I'm not sure how much I'm going to get, but it may be significantly more than enough to replace with the identical stuff because I can likely salvage all the components off the rear of the bike (anything behind the front of the bike). So the great question. If you had your choice of steel builders to make you a custom/semi-custom SS cross frame/fork, who would you choose. Currently off the top of my head are TET, True North (right now maybe my top choice), Curtlo (too pricey?), Phil Wood, Sycip (pricey), Kelly (cheaper, not custom?, may fit anyway), Igleheart (I have a road bike of his that I LOVE... but two of the same?), others? Thanks, Peace and Light, Ben PS, yes I'm pretty much ok... a few chipped teeth, some minor road rash, a good strong concussion (thank god for helmets though), and some really sore muscles and joints (right wrist and lower back, left knee)... all in all for 25mph into the hood of a car, not so bad. |
| Glad you're OK | tamjam Apr 17, 2002 11:26 AM | | ...and I have two additional recommendations for frame builders. One, of course, would be Hunter, but he is on the higher end of the price spectrum. The other is a guy named Ed Litton, who builds in Richmond, CA. I have seen a few of his road frames around and they are beautiful. If I had known about him before hiring Hunter to build my SS, I would have looked into his work a little more. He doesn't have a website, so you'd have to look up his number and call.

| eerily familiar | yowza Apr 17, 2002 12:12 PM | | Yeah, could have been alot worse. Your story is similar to mine, in that my crosscheck was run over by a PARKED car last Friday. Evidently the parking brake failed on an old Honda about 15 feet from me. I picked up a sixer at the deli near my apartment and was headed home. I was clipped in on one side and looking down the street on my left for an opening in traffic to start my climb when I felt what turned out to be the front end of said Honda on my right leg. What the hell? I fell/jumped off my ride and watched as the car came to a rest on top of my bike. I didn't even have anyone to curse at, since the driver's seat was empty at the time. Fortunately the apologetic owner was across the street and gave me her insurance info. I got out of it with a bruised knee and a few scrapes, and a new bike on the way. |
