fixed gear terror, or why I love lycra(2 posts)

fixed gear terror, or why I love lycraSeb

I guess of gotten a little blasè commuting with my ss in fixed gear mode. Today, There was a car 3/4 of the way through a tentative left turn, and it stoped when it saw me coming. Gee, nice of them to yiloed, to bad they were smack in the center of my lane when they stopped. I flipped them off and went around the back bumper.

Next block, I had a left turn, signaled, took it a little late. Craud, pedal strike! I come up out of the seat, off the back of the saddle. I landed running on the ground with the bike still under full control (hands on the brakes), but my left thigh was in contact with the rear wheel. The side lugs proceded to suck my skin into the brake booster arch, producing a nice rasbery.

All I can think is, thank GOD I was wearing lycra, not baggies. And double thank god I didn't land an inch or two to further left...

Sounds like a near-perfect Sheldon Brown style fixie dismount.

I had a little bit of pedal strike yesterday. Unfortunately, it was sleeting, and the roads were very slick, and I was down before I recognized the problem; fortunately, it was sleeting, and my limbs were basically numb, making the ride home and antiseptic wipes basically painless.

Fun stuff.
