| Report: ECC on 2000 Z2 Atom 80 | 32:20 Apr 18, 2002 9:03 AM | | I recently installed (well actually my LBS did) an ECC kit to a 2000 Marz Atom 80. This was a direct result of riding my SS rigid and loving it. I went back to suspension for the time being because I'll be riding on a lot of trails that I've never been on in the next few weeks and I like the "do anything" aspect of suspension. For those who may not know, the ECC is the Marz approach to locking out a suspension fork. What makes the ECC unique is that the fork "locks out" in the compressed position, therefore the fork's rebound is blocked which lowers the front of the nose of the bike down. Until recently ECC was only available on 2001+ 100mm+ travel forks- not pre 2001 80mm forks. So I figured what the heck. So if anyone cares, here is a list of pros and cons as wel as a final verdict
PRO:
The lockout works and works well. You bflick the switch compress the fork and hammer
The lower front end makes the bike turning more responsive, especially in switchbacks
Locked off the fork is stiff as hell
CON:
There is a fine line where the lockout should be used and where it shouldn't be used. You can lock the fork out on "semi" rocky terrain but you will feel the full 4 HEAVEY POUNDS of fork when popping your front wheel up because your front end is sooo much lower.
The switch button is on the small side and is smoetimes hard to flick.
VERDICT
As I mentioned before I wanted something that could adapt to anything and I think with the ECC upgrade the Atom 80 will do that. I will readily admit I love my rigid fork and as I stick to my local trails I'll be trading up. But for 125 bucks I breathed new life into a fork that has performed flawlessly for me and now has just added even more benefits.
I hope this message isn't too SPAMish but I thought there might be a few people who may be curious...
Have fun out there. |
| Thanks, good info | shiggy Apr 18, 2002 11:07 AM | | I have been thinking about putting ECC on my '01 X Fly 100.
Is the lockout knob on the kit the same hard to grip "M" as the production forks? |
| Thanks, good info | 32:20 Apr 18, 2002 11:20 AM | | No. I have a coil/oil fork and it really isnt a knob as it is a switch (and it is a small switch and is on the 2002 Atom series production forks). I know what "M" you are refering to- I saw it on a Marathon so I'm not sure if the switch on the Marathon would be the same one that would go on the XFly. I think the ECC would be really good for a 100mm fork (as it was originally designed) and if I was using my 80mm fork on a geared bike I probably wouldn't have bothered. But SS'ing I'll take all the help I can get!
I need to post some pictures of my ride anyway so I'll be sure to get some of the fork for you. |
