My ride this morning.(9 posts)

My ride this morning.Pre-SS
Apr 18, 2002 11:03 AM
Afternoon all. As I wait for my single speed (as I still have to decide on buying new or buying old) I've been riding around every morning at 6 on my geared Iron Horse which has been converted into a poor man's SS( read "keep it in one gear and don't shift). Since I get the kids ready for school between 7 - 7:30 amwork an 11am - 7pm shift (I work in the studio of an advertising agency) and family time starts before I leave for work and immediately as soon as I get home, early in the a.m. is the only time I get to ride. There is a short, very, very rocky singletrack loop around where I live combined with very hilly roads which about equals major lung and leg burn and a very big smile when I get home. Although the ride doesn't last any monger than an hour or so, I'm out riding and the smile will be that much more bigger once I get an SS into my stable.

Thanks for listening/reading!!!

You need to get a dedicated SS. It's sooo much quieter than the no-shift option, especially on bouncy and rocky sections. You should be able to do it pretty cheap.

I know, I know!!! Unless I win the lottery ( missed out on the $325 million "Big Game" draw on Tuesday) it'll take time to find just the right bike. Looking at doing it really cheap so I've been doing the eBay, MTBR classifieds, garage sale, old stock at LBS search. As they say, "Patience is a virtue." I just wish it would happen just a bit quicker. Unfortunately I don't have parts laying around in my garage as many on this forum do. Plus, my geared bike is actually my brother in law's bike, which he doesn't want me to convert. Vented about this here a while back . Thanks though.

Just get something- quick! Get something cheap now, and upgrade later. You will have a better idea of what you want after riding awhile.

Hey, I've been reading about your plight and it broke my heart. I have a Kona Kaboom frame in good shape(no dents or dings and just a couple of paint scratches)+Surly 1x1 rear hub with a mavic 517 rim with 16t and a 18t freewheel as well as a LX front hub with a mavic 221 front rim. The frame is a 20 inch. I can let you have them for 250.00 + shipping. If this is your size then this is your chance. Drop me an email if your interested.--Jim

... you'll have us in tears so bad we'll all start sending in donations for the "Buy PreSS a bike" fund.

DON'T YOU REALIZED THAT YOU CAN'T BUY AN SS? You'd have to change your forum name. You'd have to be the "rider formerly know as PreSS". And that's a lot to type. YOU CAN'T DO THAT TO US...... :o)

Obviously the search isn't going well. Keep that positive attitude and you'll find something at some garage sale or second hand shop or the local goodwill. Or are there any used sporting equipment places around you? Local classifieds? Hang in there, one has your name on it.

On a personal note- With me being busy getting a motorcycle ready for a school weekend and what with all the rain my own SS is still a virgin. You may just beat me to the trail with one yet.....
