1st SS ride - impressions(4 posts)

1st SS ride - impressionsDarwin

Just got back from my first ss ride. Got the crap kicked out of me. Here are some thoughts.

1. Using a worn rear skewer = bad idea. It kept slipping whenever I would hit big objects or after many smaller impacts. It slipped when I charged up a steep uphill, causing the chain to fall and me to slip down on the downstroke so that my balls contacted the stem. Sh*t.

2. While it was working, I started to see why momentum is so important. Gotta flow more and think about what's coming up rather than just shift.

3. Climbing takes full body motion and works the biceps well. I've never pushed that hard of a gear on the steeps.

4. Using a 34:17 on my first ss ride wasn't such a good idea. Gearing was too tough for my out of shape legs.

Despite the setbacks, I'm ready to get back on the trail and try again. I went to the shop today for one of those bmx chain tensioners, but the two bolts don't seem to be long enough. I'll check the hardware store for some longer ones. I changed to a 34:21 (the only cog I had) until I can push a bigger gear. Does anyone have an extra 19 or 20t bmx cog or cog from an old cassette that I could buy? Also, any suggestions on tension without using the bmx thing? Maybe a better skewer, track nuts, bolts, etc??

get a bolt on wheel, and you'll never have to worry about slipping wheels again. 1x1's are good cheap wheels that are nice and durable. Jenson's got 'em pretty cheap now.

I went to jensonusa.com, did a keyword search for 'Surly', and it came up with the Singleator and Instigator only. 'Single speed' came up with Truvativ cranks and Redline hubs. Wheelset section had nothing. Were you talking SS specific wheels that they have or using spacers with what they have available??

You can get a bolt on axle for most hubs from Harris Cyclery for around $10. Just converted an old LX cassette hub for my utility bike.
