E-BB Retrofitted DEAN w/ fresh powdercoat & built upkam
Jun 27, 2002 11:18 AM
Picked my frame up from the powdercoaters yesterday and spend last night and this morning building her up. The people at Electro Tech Coatings in San Marcos, CA(near Oceanside)did a great job and I promised them I'd give them some praise on the forum. It took 'em about 4 days for the job and they charge from $55-75 for the powdercoating (with all the prep)!!! They have experience with bike frame, they also do work for Russ Denny. I know some of you are looking into having you frames painted so they can be reached at (760)746-0092, and they have a website, www.ElectroTechCoatings.com. Anyways, here's the parts breakdown;
19" DEAN Private with Co-Motion E-BB I.S. disc mounts
Cane creek S2 headset, Titec speatpost, Kore 120x7 stem,IRD carbon riser
Z2 Atom 80
180mm XT Hollowtech cranks w/ ES70 BB
34T Spot ring with a Truvativ bash ring and 18T King Kog
XT disc hubs with Mavic X3.1 UST rims and Python UST tires
Formula Activa brakes with Avid 2.0 levers

Can't wait to ride next week, I think I'll head up to Cheeseboro Canyon in Agoura Hills.
Problems...there are two small pin size hole in the left seatstay. Wade said they are for venting, I'll use silicone to seal them and slap some decals over them. The Activa's sucked when I rode them, so I doused them with some alcohol, and them seem o.k. now, but I'd love to get a pair of Avids or Formula B4s from Thor. I'll have to wait 'til Christmas. Hey singleminded, I know you thinking of powdercoating thru ElectroTech too, so I have some close up shot so you (or anyone else interested) can better see the work they do, just email me at kamnpriti@earthlink.net, and I'll email you some close up shots, they were to big to post here.
cheers!

at Vulture Cycles did the work. Great job I think. Here's a pic of the E-BB, it's a bit blurred, but you get the hint. When it comes to welds, I ain't gonna ask "Where's the beef?".

One of the crappiest welds I've ever seen.
are you trying to make a point or are you just talkingvulture
Jun 28, 2002 9:54 AM
any Idea how hard I work to make the best frame I can, any idea how little free time I have trying to do my best. If you can do a better job then step up, if you are just blowing smoke then shut up. I respect and apprecitate critisim, blatant sh*t talking behind anonymous or dead end screen names is weak and spineless. My name is on my bikes and I stand behind my frames, I also welcome comment from anyone willing to be emailed back.
Go Wade, Go! -- those guys ARE spineless. -nm-the steel-is-real man

The same dude must have posted another reply a few subjects down. Either it's the same guy with two different screen names or it's two different guys with dead screen names and one copied the other. Either way, they are both lame spinless idiots who don't know sh!t.

Weld strength is more important than smoothnessshiggy
Jun 28, 2002 10:53 AM
I would much rather have rough looking weld that is solid than one that looks nice but does not penetrate the joint.

Wade makes sure the joint is complete and will hold up. The looks come second at this point. Wade builds bikes for people who ride and his bikes ride very well. If you insist on a frame with "perfect" looking welds go to IF or Seven and send 3-5 times the cash. If you want a solid frame you can thrash and still be able to buy shoes for your kid, get a Vulture (and than Wade can buy shoes for his kid.)

I tested an aluminum tandem (not one of Crazy Mike's) some years ago that looked like it was moulded. Just gorgeous! At least it was until the head tube fell off! The welds did not penetrate the joint at all. The weld bead looked like toothpaste on the outside of the tubes in the joint areas. The beauty was literally just skin deep.

..of some of the people that make up the MTBR community is sometimes amazing. They think that they're capable of detecting a "good" weld just by looking at it through a thick coat of paint.

Weld snob and/or evilnutmidget probably couldn't do anything with a tig welder except maybe set himself on fire.

Saw your bike and did a double take. Here's a pic of my Denny that was coated by ElectroTech. I'm also thinking of getting a second frame painted by them. They do good work.

I was originally thinking of a Pearl White (sort of a slivery white), but when I took the two samples out into the sunlight, I was like, woohoo, Gold it is. BIG BIG BIG thanks for the referral to Electro Tech!!! I'm definately gonna go there again, maybe powder coat my blue ano Ellsworth Flight roadie.

She looks great Kam! I'm so glad to see her all dressed up. Paint color is fab. Will definitely consider these guys instead of Spectrum when the time comes.

Love the XT crank/XT hub/bmx cog and UST rim combo. Been thinking the same thing but waiting for non-disc rim.

Does she feel the same as before the operation?

Also, looks like you and I have the same fork. Is that the OEM Sport/air spring version? That's what I have anyway and I'm planning on converting to coil, in case you have any thoughts on that...

Congrats!!!! She's beautiful!!!
AWESOME!!!!kam
Jun 27, 2002 2:28 PM
the Z2 ATom 80 I have is already coil. You have a Bianchi Grizzly, right? I think they come with a Z3 Atom Sport or sumthin. I really wanna try to do that ECC retrofit that some have done, but I'm gonna have to wait on that one. There was a sweet X-Fly 80 on Ebay last week with ECC already installed, but it went for $280, which was way over my budget. the frame feels the same as before, but I really just pedalled around the block, give her a few tests on the hills, and we'll see then. I've ridden almost all most all the freaking air forks out there except the Fox Floats and an X-Fly, and I still think coil is the way to go. I'd love to get my hands on a Fox Vanilla 80 RL (I have a rigid aluminum frame what's set up SS right now that my bro might take. If he gets into riding, then I'll give him the Z2 and get a Vanilla). Oh, and I tried that 3:1 liquid latex/water mix for my UST set up and I haven't lost any air for about 2 days now! Thanks for the tip!
Cheers!!!

lookin forward to the full ride report. She really does look nice. Really, really nice. The DEAN decal goes well with the color, too.

I'm with you on coil vs. air. That's why I asked. The Grizzly came with a Z.2 Atom 80 Sport (now on my TET SS, with the Judy moved to the Grizzly), which seems to be the exact same as the coil Z.2s but with the air spring instead (probably to keep down the "showroom weight"). I have my LBS looking into a coil conversion for it now.

Latex been working for me too....

Cheers
about the forks...jh_on_the_cape
Jun 28, 2002 5:45 AM
I bought the atom 80 race and the ECC kit for my SS, but i ended up keeping it rigid.
If you want the ECC, contact larry mettler (mtnhighcyclery.com i think). it was 83.50 shipped. try "Larry Mettler"
when i decided not to go with the suspension fork, larry allowed me to return the ECC for a full refund. i never installed it, but that is great for a small guy operation.
i sold the atom 80 on ebay to get my money back for it. nice fork, but i decided to go rigid with a big tire.

great looking bike. i have an older steel frame that i am considering for the conversion, as well... but maybe next year. my CUSS is still great!
That's not as bad as i thought...kam
Jun 28, 2002 8:22 AM
Larry has some awesome prices for his stuff!!! I heard that the ECC kit is about $125 if you go through most bike shops, so $83 is a great deal. Did the install for the kit look difficult? Thanks for the compliment on the bike.
Cheers...Kam
install the ECC...jh_on_the_cape
Jun 28, 2002 12:08 PM
the instructions were minimal, but it looked pretty easy. remove topcap, put ECC thingy in, done.
and larry offerred that i could call him if i was unsure during the process....
I put the ECC in my X Fly 100shiggy
Jun 28, 2002 1:45 PM
Easy to install if you have worked on the forks before and understand how to rebuild them. The ECC just replaced the "dummy" cartridge in the left leg and you get a new top cap.

I love how the ECC works for standing on smoother climbs. Just filp the lever a quarter turn and stand up. The fork compresses and stays down (lowers the front end 2.5-3".) Makes for a better position for climbing and I can still have the bars higher for the descents. I do prefer to have the fork unlocked while climbing in the saddle.
thanks for the info shiggy, NMkam

If I remember correctly, that frame was made out of Reynolds 853, and not just for the maintubes. Very nice. Don't let the weld critics bother you -- I'm sure Wade does his job well and those welds are totally solid.

I have one question: What's the silver thing wrapped around the mono-stay in the back? Is it a decal or is it there for some functional reason? just curious. bike is gorgeous. you should be proud.

Vulture Cycles decal on the seatstay yoke. That tube is capped with a nickel, pretty sweet! I never noticed it 'til I got the frame back from the coaters. I knew the weld experts (a.k.a. children who don't have permission from their mom to use the computer) would come out of the wood work.
Thanks for the compliment.

i like that columbus decal you got on the seattube near the bb shell. i'll have to look for a reynolds decal to slap one on my bike ;) actually, i got the idea form a guy i rode with a couple of months ago. he had one on his cove ti hardtail (aren't cove frame hade in canada?). maybe i've seen your pic. before, and it subliminally came to mind. try to plan the new E-BB Deans ride early next week...i'll give ya a follow up after that.

Question Kam....2 PAAD
Jul 4, 2002 9:24 AM
What was the reasoning behind the need for the brake brace.....My steel gearie has an IS mount and see no need for it. I know some builders started it with Ti frames but now it seems to be a fad.
Also I seen you took the time to have the canti bosses removed but why not the cable runs? Just curious.....

Question Kam....singleminded
Jul 5, 2002 7:09 AM
I'm not Kam, but since that frame was mine before Kam "Vultured" it, I'll take the liberty of replying, FWIW. (Of course, not that I even need an excuse....;-)

Brace:
This may be a matter of better safe than sorry. Wade was doing a bunch of surgery anyway, so it was no big deal to add the brace. If it means anything, Bianchi built a brace into the steel Grizzly gearie I have. I personally have no clue if it's really needed, but I have seen posts on this board about problems when there was no brace. It's possible that the hayes-style mount that Phil uses (or used) is less of an issue because of its position on the CS instead of the SS.

cable runs:

I think they were removed. Certainly the shifter ones were. The braze ons on the top of the TT were left intact, which may not have been a bad idea as they provide a couple diff options for how you run the housing. The brake braze-on on the left SS, if it is still there, provides an option, too. e.g., if you wanted to use one of those adapters that slips into it ans secures the housing along side.
Better safe than sorry...2 PAAD
Jul 5, 2002 7:44 AM
I was refering to my geared hard tail, the s/s has the hayes mount on the lower stay. The gearie was built by the Sycip bro's also and they used the IS mount on the upper stay as most. They also used T.R. braze on drop outs which I prefer so guess there is no weld to break in that area. I do not think the braking forces generated are strong enough to break the stay either and I find it a cleaner look without it.

Later,
Eric

I am stealing your idea! My new build up was on its way to the powdercoaters and I had to stop them and change colors. It was going to be painted black but now it is gold. Those are some sweet looking rigs.
