Hubs - CK SS vs regular cassette and bmx cog(12 posts)

Hubs - CK SS vs regular cassette and bmx cogskinl
Jun 28, 2002 10:13 AM
What is the advantage of using the CK SS hub and cog vs. using a 8 or 9 speed cassette hub with bmx cog and spacers, assuming both are using a QR and EBB? Does the CK have less dish?

The King has zero dish.

Lets not forget that wheels with regular cassettes are plenty strong. They have been in use for decades on the road and in the woods. The ability to fine tune your chain line by adjusting the position of your cog with spacers is a plus.

That's what I was thinking. I started my SS journey using a tensioner with a cassette wheel and spacers. I then purchased a SS bike with horizontal dropouts and SS wheel with freewheel. Now I'm thinking of SS w/ECC but back to the older wheel until I can afford a King or other SS cog wheel.

Is anyone using the CK hubs, and being happy about it?
I met a roadie who was using a CK hub; the sound of this hub is very disturbing (on pavement I use a set of wheels built with an old LX hub with silent clutch...).
There are many other alternatives: Phil Wood, Paul, Spot, Hope, Surly, OnOne and others.

...most are freewheel hubs, not cassette like the CK. Hard to compare them

I know these are freewheel: Phil Wood, Paul, Spot, Surly.

They all are, I think.
Only CK ($300!!), and Shimano DX (BMX=110mm, $60) are cassette hubs.
I was only refering to them as SS specific hubs.

I always thought the whole point of single speed bikes is to put one together without spending much cash. A cassette hub works great, you don't even need a BMX cog, track down an old Shimano twist-tooth cog, that's what I run and it's fine. Another advantage is you can run a double if you need to, with two chainrings. Calculate the two separate cog/ring combos so the chain length comes out the same, then you got a climbing gear and a cruising gear. Dish? Why, do your geared MTB wheels collapse a lot? A standard MTB wheel with a cassette hub is plenty strong, what's the issue?

I got a one year old 9sp MTB wheel to collapse.
There is no need to spend $$ (or €€) in a SS specific hub.
I would recommend a BMX cog. I threw a chain while jumping when I still had a 8sp K7 cog and crashed badly. A Shimano DX cog is cheap.
