| Paging Zoman? | Lumpy Phil Jun 28, 2002 10:42 AM | | I was checking back through some old posts and came across a post about the effecacy of SS bikes.
I didn't read through all of them but Zoman couldn't understand how SS drivetrains are more efficient. Well...how about the fact that a casstte and chain are never in perfect alignment, try getting them to line up, it's impossible. With a SS you can line it up dead straight (little drag). SS bikes run a shorter chain (less chain stretch). Gearies run long ass chains that flop around and only pull from the the top. SS chainlines pull from top and provide more grab around the cogs (proven to be 10-15% more efficient) proven by Prof. Ron Broughton at the University of BC in 1982, his son raced go-karts.
As for the part about passing us on the trails. Give me a break Zoman the only thing you can pass is ass gas. SS bikers have stronger legs, are better and smoother cyclists and have bigger lungs than most cyclists.
Yes, we do like the simplicity of running a single speed. Don't have to worry about worn cogs, skipping gears, and we run much stronger wheels (no dish). Have any other questions just let me know I'll be happy to help you out.
The best thing about SSing is watching you gearies trying to find the right gear to get over the little bumps you call hills. I laugh at you trying to find the 32:17 combo for a hill. Maybe you should just set it before the ride and adjust your derailleur limits screws so you can't change gears. Trust me you'll be better in the long run. You won't damage your pretty Tracer with chain suck. |
