Townie Makeover with Lurid PhotosBigwheel
Sep 11, 2002 8:27 PM
Well after an absurdly long time my Onespeed is back in action. This bike was originally a 26" wheel but due to my zealous fascination with 29"ers I just couldn't pass on the opportunity to make it into one. Stipped the paint and moved the braze-ons up and there was enough room in the drops to get the bigger wheel in there. A new powdercoat, fork and bracket drive (which makes it a two speed), and oh yeah, as long as it was stripped added braze-ons for gearing if I ever want to go that route. Just gotta dial in the stem to finish.

Here's the almost finished product:

Closer look at the new fork:

Closer still:

The Speed Drivetrain:

The rear hub, NOS WTB Flip Flop, 27t front, 20t rear yields a 39"/65" ratio with the click of a heel:

The Saddle, NOS Brooks B5N, Thirty plus years old and never been ridden til today!

The Post, Campy Euclid clamp mated to a Ti post. This is actually second choice, with the first choice on order.

One more look at the whole enchilada, the trail beckons, Hartmans tomorrow!!!!

Thanks for looking!

What a NEAT bike... holymoly unique collection of parts... heh...

Sweet; how's the BB height?club

my converted Treck MTB with 4 sp. Nexus on 700x45Cs has a 13.5" BB height, and I have to hop off the saddle to put a foot down, which I find annoying as hell. Searching the trash piles for a 27" wheel suitable touring frame for the wheels, then will go 1 sp. towner for the Treck. Particularly jealous of that old Brooks and of course the 2-sp. clickie. Got any of those you want to send me?
thats purdy, just dang purdy.......JAK

What's the purpose for the extra tubes on the fork?Brandon

Some kinda front rack?
StrutsBigwheel

Those are struts. Their purpose is to reinforce the Ti legs, which allows the legs to be pretty light, yet still strong. Stuts were used back in the early days because the metals they had then were relatively weak but heavy. The whole fork weighs a little under 1.5 lbs., so while serving purpose it also adds retro style that complements the top tubes.
