| New gearing setup | shiggy©® Sep 15, 2002 9:29 PM | | 44x26 - the same final ratio as my usual 34x20
On my tandem it always felt easier to turn the 40x20 than the 34x17 so I had to try it on the Chester.
Yes, I think it is a little smoother. |
| What about log clearance? | Drevil Sep 15, 2002 9:58 PM | | Aren't you a log-hopping fool? ;^) I am not so good, so I need all the clearance I can get. I do remember you getting a higher BB than the norm though... |
| NOW you've done it! | Spar¡cus Sep 16, 2002 5:58 AM | | Gawd! (Rolling eyes.) You know shiggy.
Now he's gonna compute the tooth-to-log distance with his new gear on his high BB frame and compare it to the same dimension on a "regular" bike -- and he'll prolly give us the answer to the tenth of a millimeter!
Just had to open yer big mouth, dincha?

| 2cm less than my 34t | shiggy Sep 16, 2002 7:50 AM | | but still higher than the big ring on a "standard" gearie. I was still clearing the logs without touching the ring and my buddy was hitting his on his Fisher gearie. |
| how about a 60/30? | club Sep 16, 2002 6:18 AM | | I've got two sets of Houdaille PowerCam cranks, one new, one used, 175mm cranks, 60/44t rings on a 144mm bolt circle. Saving the unused one either for EBay, or maybe make a cool wall clock outa it if I could rig the crank arm as a pendulum to tick-tock back and forth. I just can't get the idea outa my head to put the used one on a SS with about a 30 or 32T cog on a cassette hub. Just to be weird, I know the clearance would suck. Have doubts the PowerCam action would work with a fixed gear, or I'd do that, ala Mile A Minute Murphy's bike with the huge ring. If I find a suitable frame with horizontals in this fall's trash pickup, I might try the SS. Yeah, bigger rings and cogs are smoother, no doubt. |
