Dear Momma,

Well I hate to say it, but you were right. I didn't think I could sink no lower, but I did. I went ridin' on this here P.U.S.S thing. Now get yer mind out'n the gutter, that stands for Patapsco Underground Single Speeders, or sumthin' like that.

Anyways, my friend Joe said to a bunch of us, "Hey, hey," I think he said it three times, "Hey, come on down to this ol' park and ride bikes with us. Don't bring but one gear, but do bring a sixpack of microbrew." Well, I didn't see no purpose in no tiny little beers, so I brought a real six pack. Is a peloton of single speeders a singleton?

Anyways, Joe is an outlaw or something, and he got the weatherman to make it rain for two days leading up to the ride. It cleared up on Saturday just fine, but it left them trails slicker n' snot off a doorknob.

This is what the course looked like.

Momma, these here sinners done made me drink all that beer. I tried to avoid it by doing sneaky things like falling off, being the last one up every climb, falling off, getting lost on a part of the course I'd already ridden, falling off, and getting off the bike and then falling down anyways, but every time I got to the spot in the woods were we was hidin' from the revenuers, somebody would slap another beer into my outstretched hand. force another beer upon me.

I wasn't the only one though. Some of them fellers was downright different.

Ridin' through the crick.

Down one of them slick hills.

Cross another crick, with a fun little bridge/ladder.

It felt like Hollywood with all the paparazzi there. You couldn't floss your teeth without somebody takin yore picture.

Yard sale.

I ended up wearing most of the park on my clothes, but I rode back down the hill to Ellicott City and changed at my truck. All them other folks was parked at the top of the hill and drove down. How about that. We all had a good dinner and made fun of those folks who weren't there with us. I had to drink more there or it would have seemed un-socialable.

Well, it sure was a good time. Tell your cellmate I said howdy, and keep hoping for good behavior.

Yore lovin' son, Beauregard.

PS Do you think Aunt Lenora has sobered up after her divorce with Uncle Phil because he thought she was too fat and ugly? Ricky says Jason needs a girlfriend, and I thought of her. Jason sure was doin' something funny in this picture.

you're not right... P.U.S.S. related post...Allroy

Great time with gearless the crowd. Hanging out and shooting the bull was too much fun.

Let's plan an SS ride at the watershed real soon.

A big thanks to everyone who showed up and helped out. The rally couldn't have happened without help loading in/out coolers and ice, trash, marking the course, bridge building, etc. etc. etc. Had lots of fun, met lots of people, can't wait to do it again.

Excellent pictures and commentary by Hjalti and Allroy. Anyone else who has pictures, drop a line to me at riderx@singlespeedoutlaw.com, I'd like to get a hold of them. Didn't take too many myself, but here's a couple.

I'm happy to say we only had 6 beers left, so everyone was pulling their weight!

The awards: Well, couple people worth mentioning just for the hell of it.

Rider who risked life and limb to show up: TOMA gets this award for showing up despite having a 2 1/2 week baby girl at home, risking the wrath of both wife and in-laws. Now that's dedication. Good luck w/ that little girl man - have you bought her a bike yet?

Rider with the greatest willpower to ride a single speed: This award goes to Jay-Bone who helped me stash the coolers and ice at the beer stop in the morning. His SS convesion was still not done. I sent him home w/ a Surly fork to finish up before start time. Rear brakes were knackered so he just removed them and rode front brake only in some sketchy conditions on his first SS ride ever. Nice.

Longest beer haul: Nick, who rode his bike from Fell's Point with a bag of beer to make the rally. Hjalti gets an honorable mention for parking at Ellicott Mills and hauling his load up some big climbs.

Best Dressed Rider: Drevil, the pumpkin, for obvious reasons.

To all of the award winners - since you failed to show up at the post-ride pub, we drank your awards. Sorry, better luck next time! At least you have the satisfaction of winning.

Cheers,
Joe

Thanks mugg and all who posted shots. If I had a beer right now, I'd be crying in it.

I asked TOMA if "Muscles from Brussel" was going to make it. We'll have to hit the Watershed for an SS get together soon.
I'm there....eelpie

just let me know when. Hopefully this rain will go back to whatever demon-ridden realm it normally occupies.
