It is a wider chain than your typical 8(and fewer) speed chain which is referred to as a 3/32" chain. The wider 1/8" are commonly used on track bikes and BMX, among others.

In terms of compatibility, an 1/8" chain will fit on all SS bikes (gears come in an 1/8" width, too, btw). A 3/32" chain may not fit on a bike (but likely will, as most cogs/chainrings sold are this width).
