| What's your favorite BIG tires for SSing rigid? | mtnpat Jan 31, 2003 9:01 AM | | I am currently running the WTB 2.4 Mutanorpators that came with my SS, but am getting worried about them. You see, I don't like it when I can see the sidewall cords showing through. Yes I ride mostly rocky terrain, but my Panaracer Classic Smokes and Darts don't do this, and they have a pretty light sidewall...only ever trashed 1 Smoke or Dart in 5 years, all the rest I have simply worn out.
It does look like the Mutanoraptor has a pretty tall vulnerable sidewall I must admit, maybe that is the difference?
I am afraid of a catasrophe if a sidewall fails, I don't like faceplants, etc too much.
Now I don't think a 2.1 Panaracer Classic tire is gonna be a good choice for replacing my Mutanoraptors, so I was hoping others might could reply telling what their favorite high volume tire is for riding full RIGID.
Does the 2.4 Motoraptor have a stronger sidewall, what about the 2.5 Weirwolf? I have read the reviews, but would like to hear direct from my SS brethren.
thanks guys/gals |
| Tioga DH 2.3 hands down. | fixeyfreeride Jan 31, 2003 9:08 AM | | Been riding them for a while now and are one of the nicest riding tires around for GWNF trails. |
| I agree, except for one thing..... | JAK Jan 31, 2003 9:21 AM | | My locality!
Northern Rockies trails
They are predictable and tough. very moto!
Like the original pepper said.....
"If it ain't MOTO, it's worthless" |
| Thanks for the recommendation.... | mtnpat Jan 31, 2003 10:01 AM | | ...and the GWNF real world reference. I'll be out there Sat and Sun :-) |
| Sunday Morn.. | fixeyfreeride Jan 31, 2003 10:13 AM | | I'll be attending "church" at Big Schloss.
Can't wait for that bouldery ridge. Man that place is fun.
Supposed to be a balmy 50 degrees! |
| Run Moto & Weirs... | Allroy Jan 31, 2003 9:25 AM | | I have the 2.4 race casing Motoraptors on my SS and a 2.5 DH casing Weirwolf on the front of my FR bike. Also used to run the 2.4 and 2.24 race Mutano's.
As for the sidewalls, the race version of all has the same type sidewall to keep it a lighter weight. You can always go to the DH or Laser FR version of those tires for a tougher and heavier tire.
I really like the tires, I ride east coast rocky muddy slop, BTW.

| Run Moto & Weirs... | mtnpat Jan 31, 2003 9:52 AM | | I see what you are saying about going with the DH versions of these tires...that should certainly help things!
Still wondering about the Moto vs the Mutano in the race version? I was just at the LBS and on a brand new Mutano you could see the cords, where as on a Moto you could not. Do ya think the Moto possibly has a better sidewall in the race version? I mean my SS is already a pig at 24.5 lbs :-)

| interesting... | Allroy Jan 31, 2003 10:10 AM | | I don't remember seeing the cords on my Mutanos. Saying that I've used the 2.4 Moto's (race version) for Urban riding no problem till I got my Maxxis Mobsters (mmm). They were pumped to 60psi, but still pretty impressive!

| How did I know I would hear from you? | mtnpat Jan 31, 2003 9:54 AM | | Already been on your site...most excellent, appreciate the work you are doing.
I will check out the Gazzi 2.6 |
| re: What's your favorite BIG tires for SSing rigid? | Drbbt Jan 31, 2003 10:10 AM | | Geax Sedona 2.25--they are massive--look like some other brands 2.4's and are relatively light at 700g |
| WTB -big vol treads with a double sidewall | firefly Jan 31, 2003 10:26 AM | | All those Big volume WTB tread patterns can be found in a "Laser Free Ride" version- same tread with double sidewalls. SO, you get better side wall protection and can run em low psi for shock absorbtion, yo.
happy friday- where is the bay are ss ride this weekend, ya'll?

| I need mo' Mutanos! | xrmattaz Jan 31, 2003 1:05 PM | | I love the 2.4 Mutano Race up here in Preskit.
Wishing for some more. I am a svelt 235, and we don't got
no rocks in AZ, so I don't worry about the sidewalls, work
just fine for me. Anybody got some, let me know. |
| I need mo' Mutanos! | Bikehigh Jan 31, 2003 1:27 PM | | I have a pair of those exact tires. I liked them at first, but the more I rode them, the less I liked them. I weigh the same as you, and they did nothing for me in terms of being able to ride lower pressures on a rigid, plus they were no good for mne when climbing out of the saddle in the loose stuff, very sluggish. Right now, they're just in my pile of used but not worn out tires, yet have very little wear. Was thinking I might throw them on my squishy when I wear the Conti Survivals out, and see if they behave better on there. |
| Let me know if you want to rid.... | xrmattaz Jan 31, 2003 1:58 PM | | yourself of those awful tires.

| Geax Blade 2.25 | Blowout Jan 31, 2003 3:01 PM | | Up here in the Pacific NorthWET, the Blade works well with its big paddles for the mud and slop. It also does fairly well on wet roots as well. The 2.25 mesurement is very pessmistic. It is visibly wider that my 2.35 Kenda Kinetics and provides a nice cushoned ride. |

| hmmm...if'n ya don't know what I ride by now...then... | red-haze Feb 1, 2003 7:25 AM | | I'll tell ya!
3" of Gazziloddi in the front(dimension disc fork). Can only fit a 2.1" velociraptor in the back, or a 2.3" sidelug trimmed Tioga Factory D/H.
The gazzi gets run with about 18psi and the rear tire is usually a little more, up to 25psi. My experience with WTB is that the side walls are thin, my experience with Gazziloddis' is that they are not. I've never had a pinch flat with a gazzi, includes 2.1 MUD, 2.6 and 3.0 sizes, or a thorn puncture. I have ripped the valve stem out because I was running them at too low of pressure (the MUD) while going d/h and using brakes. Didn't notice for another mile. Did I mention they had stiff sidewalls?
The 3" gazzi is super compliant now, has about 800-1000 miles on it, all at lower pressures so the sidewall is much softer. um, it still doesn't show any wear. um I do use a 2.1-2.5" innertube, saves weight ya know ;-)
The gription of a wide soft tire is something you've got to try, but it takes some getting used to.
