hardtail to rigid SS, what am I going to need?(15 posts)

hardtail to rigid SS, what am I going to need?kokothemonkey

OK, I am a total noob to this so bear with me, what is a good rigid fork, I would looking for 1 1/8" threadless, and I assume I need a special hub and cranks and special pulley device, other than that I think that is it. What are good suggestions for the hub or a cheap wheelset I could buy, and also cranks? I don't need anything to be super light, economy is a major concern so I would like the price to be low, I am going to use my XTR v brakes with their levers, how much should I expect to pay for the wheelset?

TIA as always.

rigid fork: surly is burly and cheap, kona p2 is nice light and cheap. you can get those from bikeman.com

you don't need special hubs. just use spacers to sandwitch the cog. you probably want a shimano bmx cog. check out LBS

no need for the new crankset either. just use your old ring and if it drops chain flip it. if have enough cash, get a SS ring that'll fit your current crankset.

tensioner: use your old derailleur or get a soulcraft tensioner. better than surly IMHO.

keep it cheap because you'll probably want a full blown SS later. i did.

this'll do the trick, for significantly less scratch. . .

Hey koko, I picked up a tandem cromo fork from ubikes for like $5 and it's pretty sweet. They usually have that kinda thing in there for peanuts. :)

Wheels, I'm shopping for build supplies myself and struggling.

Thanks KW, I might do that, that's probably the cheapest way out, I ordered one through Sports Garage and they are charging me $50 for it, and they are pissing me off because it is taking like 2 weeks to get it in so I am going to cancel my order! If the weather holds on without too much snow I would like to ride with the front range group soon!

Thanks.

I would not pay $50 for a rigid fork unless you are getting something cool. Shops throw out rigid forks all of the time. They are also listed on ebay quite often. If you are going to be heading south to C/S I can get you a fork for beer.

a waning desire to descend with any sort of pleasure!
My new SS came with a rigid fork. I've given it 75 miles worth of effort. I've decided it is not fun in any way. My SS fun will increase exponentially with the addition of a suspension fork. Choose wisely, young jedi.
Come on nancy! Rigid is fun. Just pick a better line!-nm-242 Barham

while saving more cash (and time!) for the beer afterwards.

Yup, that's kind of the reason of going fully rigid, I have totally lost my line picking capability now that I have a full suspension with a Marzocchi that eats everything in its path! Now I can see just how bad my skills have become. :)
Dont trails become boring once technology "eats everything in242 Barham

its path"? Going "fast" is so much easier when 10mph seems fast. We know FS rocks, hell must of us have either owned FS or do own FS. There just come a time when the local trails are not as fun anymore cause my 100mm up front and 4" in the rear. Why try and make bicycle riding easier? Hell I am trying to make it harder and more challenging. I'll bet you will too someday.

Especially in the winter, I am getting used to riding some of my favorite easier trails so much now, I need to try to climb some of them without gears or suspension, should make it rather interesting!
"Picking a line" is a misleading term... =)Padre

i think it should be called "slowing down almost to a complete stop to go around a rock" OR "having your teeth rattled out of your head" OR "holding on the past with both hands, your knee, and your feet"
