I want to set up a CHEEP ss, help me! (12 posts)
| I want to set up a CHEEP ss, help me! | MrMinkeyBob Feb 2, 2003 2:11 PM | | I went looking at the on-one inbred and a few similar frames but the complete builds cost as much as a descent geared setup with a descent suspended fork (bla bla bla, I'm cheep).
So anyway, I now want to know what the cheeper options are, like SS conversions and that kind of stuff.
I don't need a racer, just a comuter.
Anyway, any ideas or sugestions? |
| Name your price! | Cloxxki Feb 2, 2003 2:29 PM | | There was a thread recently, on the 29" forum, with the challenge to build up a brand new Surly Karate Monkey with parts from online sources.
Here's a link to the outcome : http://www.posincorp.com/KMCheepBuild.htm
That bike would not suck and even be pretty rad for commuting. |
| Too Much! | MrMinkeyBob Feb 2, 2003 2:41 PM | | Heh, that's nice but it's still too expensive, that frame is almost as much as I want to spend in total, I was thinking something along the lines of a cheep alu frame with a SS converter on a normal gear hub. Possible? |

| Is free ok? | club Feb 2, 2003 4:46 PM | | Step1: Get out your phone book, turn to the blue gvt. pages. Call every rural municipality's police department and ask them if you could take a couple of their found bikes off their hands. OK, I said free, but it's nice to give them a small donation to the police benevolent fund, donut fund, whatever. Bigger municipalities get enough unwanted bikes that it's worth their time and hassle to hold an auction. Small departments get a few, or a dozen, and stick them in some back room, and would dearly love to have them outa there. Step 2: Drop by the P.D. that says "sure, take some away" and pick out a mountain bike frame with horizontal dropouts, this will no doubt be an older bike, make a point of looking for one with a freewheel, not a cassette hub. Also get a BMX bike. 3. Use the short chainring bolts from the BMX bike to attach the middle chainring to the MTB's crank. Remove the MTB's freewheel, and replace it with the BMX's freewheel. Install wheel and check chainline, redish the wheel after swapping axle spacers R to L until chainline is perfect. You can run the chainring in the outer or middle position on the crank to also facilitate this. 4. Shorten the MTB chain, or use the BMX chain if the SS freewheel is 1/8" vs 3/32." Uh, you might need some extra links, you should've grabbed an extra chain at the cop shop. 5. Tweak as necessary until everything's groovy. Depending on where you live, you may be able to substitute trash pile scrounging for the cop shop route. Here in Durango we have a fall trash pickup that takes anything, so folks haul out their old bikes, I get a few gems every year. I've found great frames, Campy groups, Brooks saddles, ready to ride wheelsets, etc. etc. Amazing what people throw out. Step 3: |
| Or, an option for lots more $ courtesy Nashbar | club Feb 2, 2003 4:55 PM | | they have their heavy steel MTB frames listed for $39 this weekend. Probably find a rigid fork at your LBS for a six-pack. Got an old wheelset? Use a single cassette cog with a bunch of spacer from yer LBS from old toasted clusters. Use an old road derailleur as a tensioner. |
| re: I want to set up a CHEEP ss, help me! | RE-CYCL-ER Feb 2, 2003 6:54 PM | | I have done 6 department store bike SS conversions and have 70 to go. I have limmited $$ and these seem to work good for what they are. Geared 39-17 or 60 inch for urban/student/exercize. Ground the outer 50 tooth off for a bash guard. Going to do some with 45 inch cearing for the Ionia Rec. Area single track on 1x1craig's web site. Weight is "ONLY" 33 LBS. Teens love them. CHEEP enough? |

| West of Grand Rapids?! | Geko Feb 3, 2003 12:49 PM | | I'm in Muskegon. Just thought I'd say hello to a fellow west michigander (Michiganian).
I think the police idea is a good idea. I'm pretty sure that GR gets tons of bicycles that they can't get rid of. |
| West of Grand Rapids?! | 1x1 Speed Craig Feb 3, 2003 3:16 PM | | Geko,
Drop me a line sometime in the Spring. I have yet to ride Owassippe...I heard it's really sweet. Maybe you could show me around there sometime. I also ride at Bass River & Cannonsburg (Ski Area & Rec Area) quite a bit.
Later,
Craig
